The next day, departure happened sooner than expected.

Unlike yesterday’s plan to leave after lunch, we had to pack our things and head straight for the capital this morning.

It wasn’t because of him—it was because of me.

“No. Wasn’t it my fault for advancing the schedule in the first place? A few hours earlier won’t make much difference.”

Due to the sudden turn of events, we decided to travel by carriage to an intermediate point from Waince, then switch to horses for the remainder of the journey to the capital.

If Betty hadn’t delivered that urgent message this morning, there would have been no need to rush so urgently.

“She said there’s trouble at the Trading Company. The distance is considerable, and I’m worried—is that all right?”

“We’ve already contacted the Waince branch; they’ll relay the message directly to the capital. The Trading Company’s communication network is very efficient—they can reach us faster than you’d think.”

“That’s reassuring. Since the Janet Trading Company has branches in every city of the Empire, we’ll be able to receive messages wherever we go.”

“Yes. While it’s best if I get there as quickly as possible, given the circumstances, I intend to keep up steady communication along the way.”

I nodded at Leopric’s words, recalling the message I received that morning.

It had come from Hailey at the capital branch.

In hurried, scrawled handwriting, the message was brief and urgent: there was a financial problem at the Trading Company, and I needed to come to the capital immediately.

Neither I nor Betty knew what kind of problem could have arisen in the Janet Trading Company—one of the largest in the Empire.
