Please Marry My Son (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“I am Eric Russell Gloucester.”
“I am Alicia Lancaster.”
It was an ordinary matchmaking meeting—nothing special. Just like before, they exchanged greetings, introduced themselves, and took their seats.
For Eric, the only thing different from usual was that the moment he saw Alicia’s face, he felt oddly as if he’d seen her somewhere before—but since they’d never met, he dismissed it as a mistaken impression.
“I’m sorry to have made you come all the way to the ducal residence. I wish we could have met somewhere more comfortable.”
“It’s quite alright. This might even be better.”
“I hope so. Please feel at ease.”
Though he usually detested these arranged meetings, Eric was being unusually polite this time—because it was supposed to be his last.
He had no idea where his parents had managed to arrange yet another meeting like this, but when he first heard about it, he’d absolutely refused to attend.
Yet, hearing them say—more seriously than usual—that this would truly be the final time and that they’d never bring it up again, he’d reluctantly agreed after some thought.
Of course, he didn’t fully trust his parents’ words.
He figured they’d probably stay quiet for a few months, so he planned to finish his capital duties within that time and perhaps spend a while at the borderlands.
That way, he could enjoy some peace for a while—that was his calculation.
“Please, have some tea.”
When Eric offered the tea, Alicia lifted her teacup.
“The aroma is lovely.”
“It’s Orange Sylette tea, made from tea leaves grown in the Sylette estate.”
“I can taste a hint of fruitiness, even though it’s black tea.”
“Is that so?”
“But it doesn’t quite taste or smell like orange.”
Alicia generally liked tea, but this was her first time trying this particular blend.
Since it came from the ducal estate, it probably wasn’t widely distributed across the country.
“It’s been called that for a long time, though I don’t really know why. I asked when I was young, but no one ever gave me a proper answer.”
“I see. I was curious—what a shame.”
Alicia set her teacup down.
As if she had something to say, she avoided Eric’s gaze and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
Seeing that gesture, Eric thought she looked somewhat shy.
So this young lady, whom his mother had praised endlessly, was no different from all the others he’d met before.
Since he’d been unusually courteous, he couldn’t let her develop any false hopes—it was time to wrap things up.
In truth, Alicia had never intended to attend this meeting at all.
She was grateful that the Duchess of Gloucester, whom she barely remembered meeting, had taken such a liking to her—but it was the first time anyone had come directly to her home to arrange a match like this.
Perhaps that was why her mother, the Countess of Lancaster, had seemed unusually eager about it.
‘“It’s not a sword, so you can’t just leave a hammer lying around”—what on earth does that even mean?’
Alicia grumbled inwardly.
When her mother had first mentioned the meeting, Alicia had been repairing a leaky warehouse.
She’d simply been nailing planks together when her mother suddenly said that and started tearfully insisting she attend the meeting.
She couldn’t fathom how those two things were connected, but to calm her mother down, she’d absentmindedly nodded—and that’s how she ended up here.
At least the man sitting across from her, though seemingly reserved, was well-mannered and kind, so the meeting wasn’t too uncomfortable.
But that was all.
‘I still need to finish repairing the warehouse today. I should wrap this up quickly and leave.’
As she tucked her hair behind her ear and mentally reviewed her to-do list, Alicia looked up and spoke.
“I have no intention of getting married.”
“Oh, I agree… Wait, what?”
It was a relief they shared the same view—he could now easily conclude this supposedly final meeting.
Yet, for some reason—perhaps because she’d spoken first, or because this deviated from his usual pattern—Eric felt strangely unsettled.
Unaware of Eric’s inner turmoil, Alicia continued earnestly.
“I realize it might be impolite to say this after accepting the meeting, but I thought it best to be honest right away.”
‘Right. I used to think the same way and would end these meetings quickly.’
For the first time in dozens of such encounters, a woman actually agreed with him.
But strangely, he felt both slightly annoyed and oddly wounded in his pride.

Then he reconsidered.
Actually, this worked out well. Since the young lady had brought it up herself, he wouldn’t be scolded for behaving badly again.
Still…
“I’ve heard the Earl is a fine man. I’m sure you’ll find someone more compatible.”
‘Ah, so there are differences in our thinking too… But is it normal to think like this right now? Why am I reacting this way—could I be flustered? Surely not.’
Eric was so taken aback that no words came out of his mouth, and an awkward silence fell between them.
Feeling uncomfortable with the silence, Alicia decided it was best to leave quickly.
“Then, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll take my leave.”
“Huh? Ah, yes.”
Eric snapped out of his daze and stood to see her out.
But feeling uneasy, Alicia declined with an apologetic smile.
“There’s no need to see me out. Goodbye.”
“In that case, I’ll see you off here.”
Still awkward, Eric braved impoliteness and escorted Alicia out before sitting back down.
‘You’ll get seriously burned one of these days.’
He suddenly recalled Alan’s words and checked his pocket watch, letting out a dry chuckle.
Fifteen minutes. The meeting had ended in exactly fifteen minutes.
[This is the timeline separator]“Was I a bit rude?”
Alicia sighed in the carriage on her way home.
It would’ve been better if he’d been rude first—then she wouldn’t feel so guilty.
Unlike all the other men who’d approached her before, he’d remained perfectly courteous even after she’d made her rejection clear.
He’d even tried to see her out politely, hadn’t pressed the issue when she looked uncomfortable, and stepped back cleanly.
Compared to that rude man at the salon last time, he was far—hmm? Wait…
“Oh! That security officer from back then.”
It finally clicked.
“No wonder he looked familiar. Do you think he recognized me too?”
Now that she thought about it, Eric had seemed to hesitate slightly when their eyes first met.
“Could he have pretended not to know me?”
She’d just briskly dismissed someone who’d helped her in a difficult moment without even revealing himself—dismissed him cleanly in fifteen minutes.
“Aaah, what have I done!”
She still needed to apologize for nearly hitting him with the door, and thank him for his help—but she’d swept away that chance too, nice and clean.
Overwhelmed by fresh embarrassment at her own actions, Alicia covered her burning face with her hands.
[This is the timeline separator]When Eric stepped out of the reception room where he’d been sitting alone, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were waiting outside.
“She’s already gone?”
“Yes. Then I’ll take my leave as well.”
He tried to walk past them, but his parents’ gazes made him uneasy.
Their eyes seemed to say, ‘Serves you right. You finally got what was coming to you.’
He tried to ignore them and leave, but the Duchess of Gloucester spoke up.
“Didn’t you break your own record?”
“Wasn’t your last record about fifteen minutes?”
“Oh, then you’ve definitely broken it—this one ended in just under fifteen.”
“……”
“I knew you’d end up like this. Honestly, I thought that young lady was perfect.”
“Same here. She seemed a bit too good, if you ask me.”
“That’s how matchmaking goes. If you like them, they don’t like you—and if you don’t, they’re the one who’s interested.”
“That’s why people say fate exists, I suppose.”
“Though I’m not sure if you’ll ever find your fate.”
The Duke of Gloucester patted Eric on the back.

Eric wasn’t sure if that counted as comfort, so he stayed silent.
“It’s all karma. Good for you. Since this was supposed to be your last meeting, you’ll just live alone in lonely solitude for the rest of your life—exactly as you wanted.”
The Duchess’s words were sharp.
The Duke nudged her lightly, telling her to stop, but she shot him a glare.
“What? Did I say something wrong?”
“My lady, even if this insensitive, hopeless son of ours deserves it, saying it so bluntly might still hurt him. Probably.”
“Hurt? As if he’d be affected by that.”
Truthfully, he didn’t look fine.
Though he tried to hide it, his parents’ eyes—impossible to fool—clearly saw how flustered he was, which was rather refreshing.
To be honest, it served him right.
“Alright, tell us—what exactly didn’t she like about you?”
“My lady, not so bluntly again.”
“You stay quiet for a moment. There must’ve been one of your usual reasons, right? What did you talk about?”
“Well, if I must say… we actually agreed on several points.”
Like not wanting to marry, disliking wasted time, or preferring to end awkward meetings quickly.
“What? Agreed? Then you weren’t rejected?”
The Duchess cut in immediately.
“Huh?”
“But my lady, you just said your thoughts aligned.”
“No, Father, that’s not it.”
“Then you should’ve said so sooner! I nearly got disappointed for nothing. Honestly, is causing your parents stress your life’s calling? Even in good situations, you always manage to turn things upside down.”
“Calm down, my lady. The outcome is good—that’s what matters. No need for more nagging.”
“I suppose you’re right?”
“Just let me explain for a moment.”
“Oh, forget it, son. With that look on your face, what more is there to say?”
“Look how shy you are! In all my life, I never thought I’d see you like this.”
‘How can you possibly see me as shy? I’m not shy—I’m exasperated! This is ridiculous!’
“I wish she’d stayed a bit longer, my lady. I barely got to exchange a few words with her.”
“She must have urgent matters. She’s always so busy with work, and they arranged this meeting in a hurry—she probably had something she couldn’t postpone.”
“I suppose so? She seemed very well-mannered earlier, so there must be a good reason she left so suddenly.”
Eric finally fell silent.
He was already overwhelmed, and now that he’d come this far, he knew his parents wouldn’t listen to anything he said anyway.
He began plotting how to slip away, thinking he’d clear up the misunderstanding later.
“So, when will you meet again?”
“Meet again? Why?”
“What are you talking about? You have to keep meeting for feelings to develop.”
“No, do we really have to go that far—”
“What’s with you now?”
“What? Are you shy? Well, since this is your first time like this, I suppose it’s understandable.”
‘Exactly which part of me looks shy? Doesn’t it look to anyone like I’m utterly baffled and dumbfounded?’
He muttered inwardly, but as expected, his parents paid no mind to his darkening expression.
“Still, if we take the initiative, you’ll seem too dependent on us. You should handle it yourself.”
“I really worry about you. After spending all that time in military academy and the knights’ order, surrounded only by men…”
‘Should I kill my past self for running my mouth?’
He had to admit—it was entirely his own fault.
In his momentary panic, he’d forgotten his parents’ usual pattern and spoken without thinking.
‘You’ll get seriously burned one of these days.’
‘Yeah, Alan. Today really must be that day.’
Just then, the Duchess of Gloucester called out, snapping him back to his senses.
“Aren’t you leaving?”

“Huh?”
“You used to leave right away even when we asked you to stay longer. Why are you just standing there? Hurry up—we’re busy with preparations.”
“……I’m going.”
Normally, his parents’ dismissal would’ve been welcome, but not today.
In the end, Eric was forcibly shoved into a carriage by the Duke and Duchess, left only to stare blankly at his parents as they waved cheerfully.
Only after the carriage had traveled far from the ducal residence did he suddenly recall his parents’ last words.
“Huh? Wait—preparations? What preparations?”
And the true nature of those preparations plunged Eric into panic once again.

I love how they interact with each other. They feel at ease together.
Hahaha. The butler’s perfect timing. And Erik hiding his face.
Maybe I’m really wrong about it, but I think Alicia has something to do with what happened ten years ago and maybe her father is the leader of that group.
