Aden murmured quietly, biting his lip, his brow furrowed. His Adam’s apple bobbed.

For a moment, he thought his chest felt itchy—but given how ragged his breath had become, it was clearly suffocation.

He’d claimed to respect Ludmila’s choice, yet in the end, that had merely been self-deception.

Thus, no matter how hard he tried to ignore it, worry relentlessly chased him each day—worry over what ending Ludmila’s choice might bring, and whether her safety might be compromised.

But Ludmila had ultimately chosen her own path, and now only he remained.

Since he hadn’t died, he had to make the one who shot him pay a price befitting the crime.

Yet the fact that Ludmila still haunted his vision weighed heavily on his heart.

Aden smoothed the painting. The rough texture brushed his fingertips, and he bit the corner of his lip. Was this the painting she’d promised to give him?

“Where should I hang this painting…?”

“Cover it with the cloth again.”

“Huh?”

Salom asked, startled, but Aden turned away without answering.

Leaving behind Salom’s bewildered gaze, Aden stepped out of the room and entered Ludmila’s empty quarters.
