This time, too, the one left speechless was the Emperor.

He was the Emperor—the man who, in all his life, had never lost an argument to anyone in any situation. (Not that he’d ever lost in any other way, either.) Yet, because of the girl before him, he kept finding himself at a loss for words again and again.

What was even more baffling was that she had absolutely no idea whatsoever of the influence she held over him.

“Your Majesty… you can’t understand the speech of animals?”

At Arabella’s question—asked with wide, astonished eyes—the Emperor paused for a moment in thought, then countered with a question of his own.

“You… can understand the speech of every animal? Even birds that fly through the sky and fish that swim beneath the waves?”

Arabella narrowed her eyes into crescent moons and answered with a bright, cheerful smile.

“Oh, come now, Your Majesty—I’m no sorceress or psychic.”

“R-right… Ha, ha…”

“I can’t possibly hear them unless the bird flying overhead comes close, or the fish beneath the water surfaces to speak with me.”

Again, not a single word escaped the Emperor’s trembling lips.

Of course. It was just like how people couldn’t understand conversations happening through a wall—similarly, distant animals’ voices wouldn’t reach her ears either.

The Emperor picked up a few honey-glazed roasted almonds from the plate before him, placed them gently between his soft lips, and asked,

“So… you understand the voices of all nearby animals, then? Both livestock and wild beasts alike?”

Arabella, as though he’d asked something obvious, popped a sweet almond into her cheek, chewed it quietly, and replied,
