She’d tried avoiding it, getting angry, pretending not to hear, changing the subject, or even walking away—but since I’d asked outright, Freyrie seemed to finally realize she couldn’t dodge my question any longer with more excuses.

Even so, I’d always refrained from prying unless she volunteered to speak first; this time, I hoped she’d finally open up.
