The moment I heard those words, I stepped back a pace from the World Tree, crossed my arms, and pouted with a sulky expression. I couldn’t let it stay behind me any longer—what if it suddenly covered my eyes again and showed me some bizarre vision?

More than anything, I was slightly annoyed because the World Tree and I had always been so close; yet, why did it insist on choosing only moments that embarrassed me? It claimed it was happy to see me again after hundreds of years, yet it resurrected only things I never actually did and forced me to relive them.

I thought… Lilith said the creature would soon vanish, and I truly believed it had disappeared for good. So its sudden reappearance startled me beyond words. Dazed as I was, I had no time to react before being overwhelmed by hazy, uncertain memories—forget about calmly sipping tea and reminiscing fondly about our friendship; that ship had clearly sailed.

It was always the same: popping up out of nowhere, making some flimsy excuse about having urgent news before it dissolved, since it was about to fade away soon anyway, and then vanishing after saying whatever it pleased like a hopeless fool. I briefly looked away, pouting, before lifting my chin and staring straight at the World Tree.

It still hovered faintly in midair, ghostlike and semi-transparent.

“What’s the point of suddenly showing me something like that?”

And why on earth was it wrapped in white cloth that looked just like God’s? If it was going to shed its arboreal form anyway, couldn’t it have chosen something a bit more impressive?

Maybe only its soul had slipped out?

At least, the one small comfort was that its face and hands didn’t resemble God’s at all. Had it emerged with an identical visage and claimed to be the ‘World Tree,’ I might have punched it on the spot.

It would have been furious, misunderstanding that I’d mistaken the World Tree itself for God, and interpreting my words as a grave insult.

‘Maybe you’re entangled with God just like I am.’

I scoffed inwardly, making no effort to hide my dissatisfaction with the situation. Truly, the World Tree’s fate was as tragic as mine.

“You don’t mean that’s what you’re giving back to me, do you?”

I tilted my chin slightly toward the box the past version of me was clutching tightly in the vision the World Tree had shown. Though perhaps my hair had obscured it earlier, the box—supposedly red—was actually a brilliant white base adorned with lilac and blue hues, and set prominently into its surface was a large gemstone that looked exactly like my own eyes.
