I realized that his subtly wrinkled face, more unreadable than ever, meant he had noticed my mistake. The murmuring voices of people outside gradually faded away.

The silence of the space where only the two of us existed seemed to spread even outward. In the quiet room, Tae Hong, who gave no answer, continued to look only at Hae Jin.

I wished he would just get angry. If he would at least show the emotions he was suppressing so hard, I thought my heart would feel lighter.

But he said nothing. After quietly looking down at me, he pulled over the chair from under the bed and sat down.

Tae Hong sat close beside the bed and reached out toward Hae Jin’s forehead. His large palm was big enough to completely cover it and then some. The body heat I felt on my forehead was still burning hot.

“Do you have a fever?”

He placed his hand on his own forehead and began comparing.

“No fever.”

Since I couldn’t understand his intention, Hae Jin could only silently watch what he was doing.

“Did you hit your head when you fell?”

“No.”

The palm that had been checking my temperature still pressed firmly against my forehead. His big hand came down all the way below my eyes. My vision was occasionally blocked by his long fingers.

“I know that’s not it, but we should probably get a CT scan anyway.”

Hae Jin shook her head as if to say take your hand away. Only then did Tae Hong’s heavy palm lift. The moment the weight disappeared from my forehead, an inexplicable emptiness quickly passed through.

“I’m perfectly fine right now.”
