Sediloi fell silent for a moment after hearing Jemero’s words, as if lost in thought. But as he strode briskly across the spacious hall, he soon spoke.

“Even if he recovers enough to resume his duties, how can I possibly trust him with responsibilities after something like this has happened? Tell me yourself—do I really need to defend him?”

Jemero remained quiet for a moment, seemingly deep in thought, then shook his head.

“No, Your Grace. It would be far better to appoint a new chef.”

“Then do so. I leave it entirely to you. I will grant Joslyn the housekeeper no authority whatsoever—handle everything yourself. Once the current chef is well enough to move about, settle his wages and send him away.”

“Understood, Your Grace.”

Just as he turned toward his residence in the western wing, hurried footsteps sounded behind Sediloi.

At the light, quick patter of small feet, he turned his head—and Ariante, who had been running toward him with her face flushed bright red, swayed to an abrupt halt like a carriage making a sudden stop.

“Oh, Father! You’re back!”

Sediloi suddenly felt Swan’s image flicker over Ariante’s face and bit down firmly on the inside of his lip. Was it because of her expression—so overjoyed at seeing him that she didn’t know what to do with herself? He’d never seen her like this before, and it left him thoroughly flustered.

“Yes, Ariante. Are you feeling well?”

Ariante’s eyes widened with delight. She longed to cling to Sediloi just as she did with Meiana and pout for attention, but for now, she hesitated and merely watched him warily.

“I’m fine, Father.”

“I’m glad to hear it.”

An awkward silence settled between father and daughter. Sediloi knew Ariante was acting shy for some reason, though he couldn’t fathom why.
