Meiana wished Beinti would say, “Actually, that’s a lie,” but of course, nothing of the sort happened.

She had always considered the possibility that things might go awry. But she never imagined Gretel would actually find a way to slip through the cracks.

Beinti continued excitedly.

“Judging by the atmosphere, it doesn’t seem like Housekeeper Joslin helped her escape. So Gretel must have somehow convinced that servant to run away with her. Everyone’s just tiptoeing around Joslin, keeping quiet. The mood outside is like thin ice.”

“Did Housekeeper Joslin order anyone to find Gretel?”

Beinti’s lips twisted sideways.

“How would I know? No one’s said anything like that. Besides, it’d be weird to go around asking everyone personally.”

That’s exactly why I sent you to do that strange task, Meiana thought.

But Beinti’s words weren’t entirely unreasonable. Everyone knew Beinti had started attending to Ariante and had been getting along quite well with her lately…

Casually chiming in or probing gently might pass unnoticed, but if she went around interrogating people, Joslin would surely seize any excuse to pin something on Beinti.

Meiana went into her room and brought out a small vial she’d hidden in the corner of her wardrobe. Beinti immediately recognized what she was holding and dramatically shuddered.

“Ugh, how dreadful! Why on earth are you carrying that ominous thing?”

“What nonsense are you spouting? This is the crucial evidence! Gretel had this in her possession.”

“Hmph! Even if that’s true, she’s already run off—how do you plan to find her? His Grace the Duke is supposed to arrive tomorrow, but by the time he gets here, it’ll already be afternoon. Gretel and that servant will be long gone, far beyond the duchy’s borders.”

“It’s not just about Gretel. Have you forgotten? Housekeeper Joslin is definitely involved in this. The real issue isn’t Gretel—it’s Joslin.”
