Meiana frowned, clearly displeased. There was no other reason—Jocelyn’s arrogant demeanor had instantly stirred up an ominous and unpleasant feeling in her.

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

Meiana said.

“His Grace wouldn’t possibly keep you by Lady Ariante’s side if he knew just how mad you’ve become. Surely, that’s unthinkable, isn’t it?”

The unpleasant smile at the corner of Jocelyn’s lips faded slightly. Yet her expression mocking Meiana became even more pronounced.

“Don’t even hope that His Grace will drive me away.”

Jocelyn said. And before Meiana could utter a reply, she added another line.

“You’d be better off worrying that you’ll be the one driven away by my hand first.”

Only after finishing those words did she finally regain her usual blank expression. As always, she clasped her hands before her, straightened her posture, and walked away—this time without even limping.

She’s a fortress, Meiana thought. Jocelyn was like a fortress—surrounded by thorns, poison, and blades. A vicious fortress determined to protect only those of House Valterminster she deemed worthy, and to annihilate everything else.

But she had no intention of fleeing in fear.

“Well then, shall we see who’s truly madder? Fine, I accept.”

Ariante, carried upstairs to her bedroom by Beinti, was strangely quiet—as if her spirit had fled. Beinti grew frantic.

“My lady, my lady! Please look at me, won’t you?”

Ariante turned her head swiftly to look at Beinti. But she said nothing, didn’t cry out, and didn’t even show her usual irritability or frustration. More than anything, that change frightened Beinti.
