For a moment, a silence passed in which no one uttered a single word. To Jocelyn, it was horrifying; to Sediloi, it was a stillness that stirred rage.

“Are you saying no?”

Sediloi spoke, his voice laced with cold mockery, deep despair, and sorrow.

Jocelyn cried out again, her voice blazing like fire.

“Your Grace! How can you say such things to me! Have you forgotten that it was an accident? How—how can you force me, who has devoted herself solely to the ducal house, to kneel on this cold stone floor as though I were a criminal! Your Grace!”

“You are a criminal, Jocelyn. Is that your answer?”

“Your Grace!”

A thin trickle of blood seeped from Jocelyn’s tightly clenched lips. At that sight, Sediloi recalled a memory from his very early childhood.

The time he had burst into her room because she refused to see him, and without even knowing what medicine she was about to drink, he had knocked it away…

Her expression then, as she looked at him, had been exactly like this. A bitter smile briefly crossed Sediloi’s lips.

“Bring it here.”

Jocelyn, not knowing what “it” was, could only widen her eyes in astonishment. The servant—whose name might have been Aint or something else—who clung to Zemero and remained loyal only to him, cast a contemptuous glance at Jocelyn before handing something small to Sediloi.

She glared at Aint, grinding her teeth as if he were somehow controlling Sediloi’s mind. But Sediloi’s next words snapped her consciousness back as though slapping her cheek.

“Do you know what this is, Jocelyn?”

Sediloi flung the object he held in his hand. Tiny and glinting momentarily in the light, it landed weightlessly onto the withering grass.
