Sediloi smiled as if he knew exactly what Meiana was thinking without even looking at her, sighed briefly, then gently kissed the nape of her neck exposed beneath her pinned-up hair and sat down beside her.

“I understand what you’re thinking.”

Meiana, looking as though she’d been struck right where it hurt, offered a cynical smile.

“So now you can read my mind too?”

“You still firmly believe you made a terrible mistake, don’t you? If only that hadn’t happened—if you hadn’t shared my bed—you could’ve pointed out my every fault as clearly as before. But now you’re hesitating, wondering if it’s even right to do so anymore, aren’t you?”

Sharp as ever, Meiana thought.

He’d always been perceptive—even back then—but except when it came to Ariante. Lately, though, Sediloi had grown noticeably sharper in some indefinable way.

He wasn’t irritable toward Meiana or Ariante or anyone else, yet he remained almost constantly on edge, hypersensitive.

Meiana spoke.

“Your Grace, every word you say is absolutely correct. I truly regret it.”
