“I asked the kitchen and heard there was some left, so I brought it.”

“I gave it to Lady Ariante myself. But aren’t I too old to drink chocolate before bed?”

“I’ve never heard that there’s an age limit for drinking chocolate. Just drink it. It’ll calm you down.”

Meiana took a sip of the warm chocolate, as if she had no choice. The moment her lips touched the beautiful cup—its pattern resembling freshly pressed red petals—a rich, bitter taste and the aroma of brandy simultaneously struck her tongue and nose.

She closed her eyes briefly as the stiffness in her neck and shoulders melted away. Warmth spread all the way to her toes, and the day’s chaotic events felt distant, as if they’d all been a dream.

“How is it?”

“It’s good. I’m glad I drank it.”

Sediloi smiled faintly. The room, lit by gently flickering candlelight as if filled with a handful of sunset, was small and plain—a maid’s humble quarters—but Sediloi’s charming smile layered over it transformed the space instantly into something cozy and intimate.

Meiana kept her gaze lowered as she silently drank her chocolate. Sediloi, perched on a small chair, also remained quiet. The silence between them swelled fully, then slowly drifted away like the soft sound of shallow water flowing somewhere.

Meiana’s eyelashes trembled faintly as she kept her eyes shut. With a sigh, her shoulders slumped downward.

“I was so scared.”

Sediloi stared quietly at Meiana’s face. Her expression seemed calm, yet he could tell part of her was still trembling with fear.

He could feel that Meiana—who had never once shown fear toward threats against herself—had exhausted her entire body and mind worrying solely about Ariante.

Ariante was Sediloi’s precious daughter as well. He couldn’t help but feel affection for Meiana, who poured out for the girl a kind of love no one else had ever given her.
