Meiana said. But it was a whisper-soft voice, barely audible. She made no move to pull away. She struggled to suppress the fleeting images and forbidden fantasies swirling in her mind, but it wasn’t going as she’d hoped.

“Your Grace.”

She spoke again. At that moment, Meiana felt Sediloi’s arm around her waist tighten even more. The sensation of their lower bodies, their lower abdomens pressing together beneath the water, made her unable to meet his gaze directly.

“Do you truly have no intention of accepting my proposal?”

Meiana lifted her head, her eyes wide with surprise. Droplets falling from Sediloi had dampened her cheeks and lips.

He suddenly recalled the sight of Meiana from a certain night. That image which had stirred impulses he’d never even considered before—the flickering firelight dancing over her warm, flushed cheeks, still glistening with moisture….

Their breaths drew so close they nearly touched. It was the very instant Sediloi, watching Meiana’s trembling lips as she searched for words, reached for her hand.

“No.”

Sediloi’s slow movement halted abruptly. Meiana turned her head away, unable to look directly into his eyes.

Their lips, on the verge of meeting, drifted apart like a fleeting brush. The warmth that had been flowing between them, mingling like ripples in water, vanished like startled birds fleeing at the sound of gunfire.

“It’s not that I dislike you, Your Grace. But that’s only… because I admire your human side—not because I wish to kiss you or become intimate with you.”

Sediloi, who had been silently gazing at her, slowly loosened his arms. The moment she was finally free from his embrace, Meiana felt both a dizzying sense of relief and a crushing disappointment that stole her breath.

Sediloi stared blankly at Meiana, who had stepped back a few paces, and spoke.
