Meiana looked up at her.

“What do you mean?”

“I’m talking about Lady Ariante. She kept complaining about being bored just a while ago, didn’t she? But now that she’s found a new treasure, she probably won’t be bored for a while, right?”

“Oh… Yes, you’re absolutely right.”

Meiana tried to calm her own taut nerves—though she hadn’t even realized they were so tense—and neatly stacked several boxes.

She had set aside items that seemed unnecessary in one corner, but rearranging them would require permission from Head Maid Joslyn, and she had no desire to ask for it. It would be better to simply call Sediloi and ask him directly.

Ibi, who had been standing quietly, left the room upon hearing Brigitte’s call. Meiana, deliberately keeping her hands busy, turned to watch Ibi go and let out a short sigh.

She was a child impossible to read… Meiana never showed it to Ibi, but every time she recalled what Ibi had said to Joslyn, a chill ran through her chest.

[“If you hit me, I’ll throw the head maid into the well.”]

“She’s far from ordinary,” Meiana thought. Of course, Ibi never revealed this side of her personality—not to Ariante, nor to any of the other maids.

She was generally very quiet, yet somehow managed to get along well with Ariante.

Her strength also played a part; there was even one day when Meiana had been astonished to see Ibi carrying Ariante on her shoulders, spinning gleefully around the spacious drawing room.

Meiana brushed the dust from her hands and took a look around the room. Though it had long been used as a storeroom, the wallpaper suggested it had once served as a guest chamber or reception room—the pattern was extremely elegant, and even its texture looked luxurious.

If they removed the boxes, laid down a new rug, and replaced the curtains with clean ones, it could instantly transform into a splendid bedroom….

Lost in thought, Meiana stiffened at the sound of a cough behind her and turned sharply. It certainly wouldn’t have been Beinti or Brigitte—or even Ibi—who would announce their presence that way.
