Meiana tilted the corner of her lips and spoke.

For an instant, the light seemed to vanish from Sediloi’s eyes. No—it wasn’t that the light disappeared, but rather that it plunged abruptly into an unfathomably deep pit.

In that fleeting shift, a moment too brief even for a single blink, Meiana thought she had ‘won’ against Sediloi—as if they’d been waging some kind of marathon war.

His neat fingers, with slightly pronounced knuckles, closed gently around hers. Instantly, Meiana felt embarrassed by the calluses hardened on her fingertips and her slightly dry knuckles.

It was only natural—she washed her hands whenever she had a spare moment caring for the child, and sewed whenever she found time—but compared to his flawless hands, hers felt strangely shabby.

“It’s getting late. Let’s continue this conversation another time.”

Meiana lifted her head to look at Sediloi. His fingers, holding hers, seemed to tremble slightly. It must surely be her imagination… yet it felt undeniably real.
