Wednesday was originally supposed to be a day when I had to go to school for lectures, but classes were canceled because of a seminar with my professor scheduled right after exams ended.

At the same time, it was also the day I’d arranged to meet my friends at SJ Hotel’s restaurant.

Although our appointment was for the evening, Yu In left home after a late, simple breakfast and, stopping by a large bookstore near her house for the first time in a while to browse new releases, called Yu Jin.

“Mom asked me to check why you haven’t called or come home.”

—I’ve just been swamped lately. Too busy to even think straight.

“But didn’t you wrap up that drama shoot not long ago? Are you already working on your next project without taking a break?”

—I’d love to rest myself! Between ads and endless meetings, they’re working me to the bone. Today I even got dragged out to meet some film studio director.

“Oh… really?”

Yu In already knew her sister’s next project would be a film.

In that palace-like hall, he’d said he’d found a script perfectly aligned with the image Yu Jin wanted to build—and if things went well, it could become the role of her lifetime.

What was it again? Something about becoming “the nation’s first love”?

—Yeah. I’m so stressed… What about you, Dongsaeng? What are you up to? Don’t you have class?

“I’m at the bookstore now.”

—Skipping school? Aren’t you being a bit too brazen toward the person paying your tuition?

There was no reproach in the teasing tone.

In fact, Yu Jin seemed amused that Yu In wasn’t attending class and ended her sentence with a soft giggle.

“It’s a free period today. I don’t skip classes carelessly, so don’t worry.”

—Right. Study hard and make that tuition money worthwhile. After all, your sister’s busting her bones to pay for it. Ugh, if it weren’t for this meeting, I’d take Nam Yu In shopping instead.

“Ugh… count me out. I’ll go with Jae Hee.”

—True, it’s been quite a while since you saw Jae Hee and Ji Han. Oh—gotta go now! Say hi to your friends for me, and tell Mom I’ll visit soon!

The call ended before Yu In could even reply.

Just before the line cut off, the low voice calling her sister sounded oddly familiar—could that man have been at the meeting too?

For the first time today, she hadn’t received any contact from him.

Having grown accustomed to checking her messages the moment she woke up, Yu In found herself oddly curious about his silence.

“…….”

Well, he’s probably just busy. He is a working professional, after all—and as a director at a major agency, of course he’d be swamped.

Trying to convince herself, Yu In opened the book she’d just picked up—but couldn’t focus and quickly drifted off mentally.

But… has he really been busy since morning? His messages usually arrive around 8 a.m.—so has he been occupied since then? That early? Too busy to even send a single line?

Though there was no way to know the answer no matter how much she wondered, her thoughts kept tangling one after another.

Thud.

Yu In placed the book back on the shelf.

It seemed today simply wasn’t the day to properly enjoy her one true pleasure—book shopping.

****

At Ji Han’s message instructing her to come down to the underground parking lot, Yu In checked her outfit one last time by the front door.

A black cardigan over a jacquard dress with a bold floral print, paired with black-toed flats.

Everything had been left behind by her sister—far from Yu In’s usual style—but she’d made an effort to comply with Han Jae Hee’s cute but firm order to dress appropriately.

Jae Hee would surely scold her immediately for not wearing heels, but Yu In didn’t feel like pairing high heels with this level of flamboyance.

She smoothed her slightly waved long hair once more and stepped out of the house.

“Hey, Nam Yu In! You’re supposed to wear heels with that dress—what are you doing!”

Just as expected, the moment she climbed into the waiting car in the basement, Jae Hee’s voice came from the front seat.

Finding her friend’s perfectly timed reaction amusing, Yu In smiled faintly and replied,

“I don’t have any heels at home.”

“You’re such a boring liar, Nam Yu In. I know our sister keeps buying you pairs—where’s that lie coming from?”

Still smiling through the teasing, Yu In peeked past the center console to observe the two watching her.

Unsurprisingly, Jae Hee—the model—looked flawless, and even Ji Han, unlike back in school days, wore a neat shirt and slacks, his hair neatly styled upward, giving him a much sharper look.

Meeting Ji Han’s wide-eyed gaze, Yu In grinned.

“Yoon Ji Han. You look great today.”

“Thanks. You look incredibly pretty today too.”

Ji Han’s smooth face seemed to blush slightly as they smiled at each other, though it was hard to tell under the dim basement lighting.

Suddenly, Jae Hee burst out loudly, as if having a fit.

“Wow! Are you guys seriously excluding me right to my face? Tell me I’m pretty too! Tell me I look great—now!”

“Well, of course our Han Jae Hee—the model—is both pretty and stylish.”

When Yu In playfully wrinkled her nose and teased, Jae Hee pouted, looking genuinely hurt.

“Nam Yu In. Don’t leave me out next time. I’m seriously upset… Hey! Yoon Ji Han! Why are you so quiet? You say something too!”

Jae Hee tapped Ji Han’s shoulder, but he ignored her completely—as if he neither felt nor heard her—and instead adjusted the rearview mirror, giving Yu In a subtle wink.

“Alright, we’re off. Yu In, buckle up.”

Inside Ji Han’s car, silence never lasted—not even until they reached the hotel.

Ever since the new day began, Jae Hee had been busy with work, and Ji Han, just back from military service and starting his first semester of readmission, had been overwhelmed—so their trio hadn’t met often, and plenty of gossip had piled up.

Laughing and chatting nonstop over Jae Hee’s playlist, they arrived at the hotel before they knew it.

As they stepped out of the car, both Yu In and Jae Hee burst into laughter at the same time upon seeing Ji Han hand over the keys to the valet as if he’d done it a hundred times before.

“Oh, Yoon Ji Han~”

“Ohhh, looks like you frequent hotels a lot, Mr. Yoon Ji Han~”

“Ugh, stop with that weird talk and just come inside.”

Scowling in obvious embarrassment, Ji Han strode ahead through the automatic doors, and the two girls, still giggling between themselves, followed him.

Inside the lobby, the first thing they saw was a massive indoor fountain made of pitch-black marble, beside which Ji Han stood waiting for them.

“No matter how many times I see it, I still can’t get used to that fountain. Isn’t it way too huge for a hotel lobby?”

Jae Hee murmured quietly while gazing up at the fountain beside Yu In.

“Yeah,” Yu In answered, her eyes tracing the cascading water over the layered marble.

Now that she thought about it—this was the very hotel where that Director had summoned her.

She hadn’t even noticed the enormous fountain the first time she came. Back then, she’d had no interest in anything around her—she’d just wanted her phone back and to get home as fast as possible.

And she’d resolved never to run into that scheming man again. That’s what she’d thought…

“Yu In, let’s go.”

Jae Hee’s voice pulled Yu In out of her daze, staring blankly at the fountain.

She quickly reassembled her scattered thoughts and pushed those occupying her mind back into the corners.

Strangely, once those thoughts cleared, even her friends’ bickering ahead sounded distant and indistinct.

“You drive really well. When I start my own company, will you be my chauffeur?”

“You truly put so much effort into saying nonsense. Can’t you just keep your mouth shut for once?”

“Aw, why not? I’ll pay you well, Driver Yoon~”

“Aren’t you tired of acting like this yet?”

“Nope. Not tired at all. It’s fun. I’ll keep going.”

Trailing behind her chatty friends, Yu In pulled out her phone and tapped the screen.

No notifications at all. A clean, empty notification panel—exactly as usual—yet today it inexplicably irritated her and left her dissatisfied.

Letting out a sigh, Yu In shoved her phone back into her bag and looked up—only to see a perfectly matched couple walking toward them from across the lobby, clearly visible even from a distance.

Yu In, who never paid attention to strangers, should’ve immediately averted her eyes.

Yet something held her gaze—the crisp lines of the man’s suit, his elegant stride, his tall frame standing a head above others, and—

most of all—that handsome face, smiling faintly as he spoke, refused to let her look away.

“Oh…”

It was him. Director Do Gi Yeon.

Yu In froze in place. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

In that moment, a chaotic wave of emotions—displeasure, gladness, disappointment—crashed over her, and someone behind her suddenly yanked her arm.

“Nam Yu In! What are you doing here?”

For an instant, she thought his cool eyes had turned toward her—but Yu In quickly inhaled a shaky breath and spun around.

Ji Han wrapped an arm around Yu In’s trembling shoulders and asked softly,

“What is it? Did you see someone you know?”

“No. Who would I know at a hotel? Let’s hurry.”

Ji Han hesitated at Yu In’s stiff, forced smile, lips twitching—but asked no further questions and instead gripped her shoulder firmly as they headed toward the elevators.

Jae Hee, who’d been waiting alone, grumbled when she saw Yu In.

“Don’t make us play hide-and-seek in a hotel, Miss Nam Yu In.”

“Sorry.”

Yu In forced her uncooperative lips into another smile.

Ding-dong.

With the hotel’s signature refined chime, the elevator doors slid open, and as they ascended to the top-floor restaurant, Yu In found herself drowning again in turbulent emotions.

They looked incredibly natural together—perfectly matched, stunningly beautiful, breathtakingly elegant.

So that’s the kind of person he meets. Of course—he’d only be with someone like that. I see…

Still lost in the lingering image, Yu In barely snapped back to reality just in time to hear Jae Hee asking if she wanted wine as she ordered at their table.

“Huh?”

“Do you want wine?”

“Uh, yeah. I’ll have some.”

“Okay. Yoon Ji Han, you’re not drinking, right?”

“Yeah. I’ve got to drive you two back.”

The two bickered briefly over the wine selection, finally compromising on an appetizer-friendly bottle, and only fell silent once it arrived.

“Alright, cheers!”

“Cheers!”

Three glasses filled with deep red wine clinked together with a crisp chime.

While the other two took modest sips and set their glasses down, Yu In stared at hers for a moment—then threw it back in one gulp and slammed it onto the table.

Wiping the lingering wine from her lips with the back of her hand, she noticed her friends staring at her with puzzled expressions.

“Nam Yu In. What’s wrong?”

“Yu In… have you suddenly started liking alcohol?”

Though their reasons differed, both were clearly surprised.

Yu In blinked innocently and held out her glass again.

The burning red liquid sliding down her throat might just quiet the turmoil inside.

“It’s good—give me more.”

Thrilled to have found a daily drinking buddy, Jae Hee eagerly poured more wine into Yu In’s glass.

“Hey, hey! Are you crazy? She can’t even hold her liquor!”

“Is it too much? Yu In, sip it slowly, okay?”

Ji Han tried to intervene, but Jae Hee stuck out her tongue, dodged his hand, and grinned cheekily.

Yu In, already feeling warmth bloom in her cheeks, smiled back just as mischievously.

It seemed Ji Han had reserved the table and pre-selected the menu—because shortly after they started drinking, the table filled with veal steak, fragrant ravioli, salmon-topped finger foods, and avocado salad.

“Wow, I’ll dig in. Thanks, Ji Han.”

“Yeah. Now stop the wine and eat something.”

“Why?”

“…Are you already drunk?”

Ji Han frowned slightly and brushed a finger against Yu In’s flushed cheek.

Across the table, Jae Hee, who’d been nibbling salad, clicked her tongue and immediately teased Yu In.

“Look at Nam Yu In—drunk after just three glasses of wine. Wobbly-wobbly.”

“No, I’m not drunk!”

With cheeks puffed out like a pufferfish, Yu In protested—but Jae Hee just giggled and mimicked her: “Not drunk, you say?”

These two really had an uncanny knack for ganging up on her.

Annoyed, Yu In swatted Ji Han’s hand away—but it returned instantly, this time snatching her wine glass for good.

“Hey, why’d you take that…”

Just then—

tap, tap—quiet footsteps on the carpet stopped abruptly right beside them.

The soft light that had been gently illuminating their table vanished, replaced by a large shadow looming over them—drawing all three pairs of eyes upward.

A cool, large hand settled onto Yu In’s shoulder, already warm from the wine.

“Miss Yu In?”

The man she’d seen in the lobby was here.
