The morning sun rose behind Harold as he stepped out of the Crown Prince’s palace. As the bluish dawn light faded as if chased away, Harold paused his hurried steps and turned around. The moment he met the blinding radiance, his vision whited out, and the world turned pure white.

“If so… will you become my mistress?”

Recalling Lily’s tearful, audacious request on that blank white canvas, Harold squeezed his eyes shut tightly.

He should have rejected her right then. He should have dismissed her as a madwoman making absurd demands and walked out of the room—but instead, his curiosity had taken hold, and it had ensnared him ever since.

“No… it was I who held on.”

Lily had repeatedly told him she couldn’t accept his feelings and begged him to let her go. Yet it was he who couldn’t release her, clinging on stubbornly. Disgusted by his own hypocrisy—claiming to act for her sake while doing the exact opposite—Harold twisted his lips and opened his eyes.

The world was now filled with bright sunlight. Gazing at the lush green trees bathed in its warmth, he thought of Lily’s eyes. He adored every part of her, but if he had to choose what he liked most, it would undoubtedly be those fresh, green eyes.

It was almost absurd that even as revulsion shivered through him, she kept coming to mind. Watching the leaves rustle as if beckoning him closer, Harold pondered.

What if he let Lily go now? What if he severed their ties entirely?

She would escape the public’s harsh stares and pointed fingers—but in exchange, she’d fall into far greater danger. Both Frederick Benjamin and the Second Prince were watching her hungrily.

Frederick Benjamin was one thing, but the Second Prince, Darius, was truly perilous. He wouldn’t hesitate to kill to achieve his goals. The moment Harold released Lily’s hand, her life would be in grave jeopardy.

So he couldn’t let go—not now.

Even if people condemned him for maintaining an illicit relationship unblessed by the gods, calling him shameless, he had no choice. Lily mattered more than anything. If her falling into grave danger was the price of his momentary shame, he’d carry guilt for the rest of his life.

Therefore, he’d postpone releasing her hand until after the matter with the Second Prince was settled. Ideally, after Frederick Benjamin’s issue was resolved as well.

…But once Frederick Benjamin’s matter was settled, would he even need to let her go?
