My Mistress Became My Wife (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 98
Gossip columns tended to focus more on sparking people’s curiosity than conveying facts, which often led them to attach utterly absurd stories.
That applied equally to the gossip piece covering Harold and Frederick’s love triangle. Harold’s eyes narrowed as he carefully read the article from start to finish.
“It’s worse than I thought.”
Of the article, which was just over two pages long, an entire page was outright lies, and the rest was completely exaggerated. Amid all this, not a single line mentioned Frederick Benjamin’s actual wrongdoing.
Based solely on the article, Lily appeared as a seductress manipulating two men like weights on a scale, while Harold was portrayed as a foolish dupe, bewitched by her into brawling with Frederick Benjamin.
The writer of this must have been a novelist, not a journalist. Harold chuckled wryly as he checked the reporter’s name at the end of the piece: Bennard—a name meaning “truth” in the ancient tongue. He didn’t know who had given the reporter that name, but it was certainly an ironic choice.
The article seemed maliciously aimed at Liliana Benjamin. Given that Lily’s reputation had never been good to begin with, people unanimously condemned her.
“The quietest cat climbs onto the hearth first—how perfectly that fits! Seriously, how dare she set her sights on Earl Brayden?”
“Exactly! She’s got nothing special about her, and besides, she’s already married!”
“They say husband and wife grow to resemble each other. She’s just doing exactly what Viscount Benjamin does.”
“I can’t understand how the Earl fell for her. Sure, she’s somewhat pretty, but she’s hardly a stunning beauty.”
“She must be skilled in bed. Men always fall hard for that sort of thing. She may have the title of Viscountess, but her behavior is no different from a common prostitute.”
Harold’s face darkened as he overheard people repeating such comments while wandering the squares and streets. With the setting sun at his back, he climbed back into his carriage and let out a deep sigh.
“This won’t be easy.”
It had been simple enough to keep Lily from hearing the rumors, but that solution was short-lived. He couldn’t possibly confine her indoors forever—certainly not beyond a week at most. Harold had hoped to quell the gossip within that time, but judging by the current situation, it seemed hopeless.

He opened his mouth cheerfully: “Ah—”
