Clack, clack—the steady sound of hooves was the only noise echoing inside the carriage. As they rode from the dressmaker’s shop toward Viscount Benjamin’s mansion, Lily, who had been silently gazing out the window, suddenly widened her eyes upon spotting a boy crouching at the entrance of an alley.

“Harry?”

Immediately afterward, Harold also noticed Harry and tapped on the window connecting to the driver’s seat. As soon as the carriage came to a halt, Emily rushed out toward Harry even before Lily could. Her neatly braided hair and skirt fluttered wildly.

“Harry!”

Harry, who had been crouched on the ground scratching the dusty earth with a twig, lifted his head abruptly at the sound of his beloved sister’s voice.

“Sister.”

“What’s this? What happened to your cheek?”

Emily, startled to see a wound on his cheek that hadn’t been there before they parted, asked in alarm. Harry gave an awkward smile and covered his cheek with his hand.

“It’s nothing.”

“Nothing? Your cheek is all swollen! And it looks like it’s cut too!”

Kneeling down to match her younger brother’s eye level, Emily gently moved his hand away and examined his swollen cheek, now clearly marked with a red scratch.

“Who hit you? Did Mother slap you?”

“No, it wasn’t that….”

“If it wasn’t her, then who did it?”

Harry hesitated, looking unsure whether to speak, but stood up abruptly when he saw Lily and Harold appear behind Emily. Emily, too, suddenly remembered the two she’d momentarily forgotten in her worry for her brother and hastily rose to her feet.
