Swept away by his smooth, natural suggestion, Lily nearly blurted out an agreement before barely stopping herself. It would be shameless to accept any more help from this man. Just as she was about to refuse, Harold let out a brief sigh.

“Oh, now that I think of it, the mansion isn’t fully prepared yet. The work should be nearly finished by tomorrow afternoon, so it would be best for you to stay at the hotel tonight.”

“W-wait a moment!”

Seeing Harold speak as though it were already settled that she’d stay at Earl Brayden’s Mansion, Lily panicked and grabbed his arm. Harold placed his hand over hers and spoke in a gentle tone.

“I’ll be staying with you, so there’s no need to worry.”

“That’s exactly what worries me!”

Lily nearly screamed her reply. Spending a night alone with Harold—just the thought made her heart pound wildly and her vision blur. Recalling what had happened at Praxis Hotel, her mouth went even drier. She moistened her parched lips with her tongue and stammered hesitantly.

“I truly appreciate your concern for me, but you really don’t have to. I can manage perfectly well on my own…”

“It’s not concern—it’s to keep myself from worrying.”

His smile was soft, yet his golden eyes fixed on Lily were resolute.

“I’m uneasy because the one who killed Madam Megan hasn’t been caught yet, and no matter how well-appointed an inn or hotel might be, it’s dangerous for a woman to stay alone.”

Well… nowhere could possibly be more dangerous than Viscount Benjamin’s Mansion. Lily swallowed the words she couldn’t possibly say aloud and lowered her gaze, deeply saddened by the realization that the place once most comforting to her had now become the most uncomfortable and perilous.

“There’s no need to overthink it.”

Misinterpreting Lily’s growing somber expression as mere hesitation over lodging arrangements, Harold gently stroked the back of her hand with his thumb and kindly explained.

“If you imagine yourself in my position, you’ll easily see which choice is best.”
