Perhaps due to the rain that had fallen all night, despite it being late April, the weather felt as chilly as early winter. The remnants of flowers, mercilessly battered by the heavy downpour, lay scattered haphazardly on the damp streets.

Harold stomped ruthlessly over those remnants, striding forward with long, forceful steps. To keep up with his pace, Lily had to walk so quickly that her shoes nearly slipped off, while Emily practically ran to follow them.

Ordinarily, Harold would have immediately noticed their struggle and adjusted his stride accordingly, but right now, he had no such luxury. His mind was entirely consumed by the Second Prince and Frederick Benjamin.

His thoughts drifted back in time, returning to the moment he had left the Crown Prince’s palace after speaking with Austin.

Austin had suggested that, since he was already there, Harold should attend the afternoon’s noble assembly together with him, but Harold firmly declined. Not only did he have no desire to involve himself in matters that didn’t concern him, but the Second Prince’s parting “advice” kept nagging at him.

Please let it have nothing to do with Lily. Harold fervently wished, but his hope shattered the moment he stepped outside the inner palace.

“Commander, there’s apparently a serious problem involving Viscountess Benjamin.”

Dillon, who had been waiting at the entrance—unable to enter the inner palace without proper credentials—rushed over the instant Harold emerged to deliver his report. Harold’s face contorted bitterly as he realized the dreaded situation had indeed come to pass. His steps quickened as he headed toward the palace gates.

Keeping pace behind him, Dillon elaborated in detail: last night, someone had dug up the grave of Madison Benjamin, Lily’s father; the culprit had left without cleaning up the scene; and Frederick Benjamin had tried to hide this from Lily.

“It seems Viscountess Benjamin suspects her husband, Viscount Frederick Benjamin, is the culprit, and immediately after the investigation concluded, she headed straight for the trading company he manages.”

Hearing this, Harold—who had just exited the palace and was about to mount his horse—paused. He, too, acknowledged that Frederick Benjamin wasn’t in his right mind, but even so, desecrating the resting place of one’s own wife’s father was utterly incomprehensible. Even a mute beast wouldn’t commit such madness.

Moreover, Harold was certain the true culprit was the Second Prince, Darius Kaman Andreas. To be precise, he viewed this incident as a direct continuation of the fire two years prior.

If Darius truly was behind this, then the theory that he had killed Madison Benjamin and set fire to the Benjamin estate either to find or conceal something would fit perfectly.

Yet hearing that Lily suspected Frederick as the culprit left Harold slightly bewildered—and worried about what that scoundrel might do to her. Thus, Harold temporarily set aside all his theories and doubts and headed straight for Frederick Benjamin’s trading company.

At that point, Harold still believed Lily was mistaken and that Darius was undoubtedly the perpetrator of this crime.
