Even though Charles Dudley and Margaret kept saying it was fine and urging him to calm down, nothing worked—until Harold stepped in, and the situation ended immediately. Grace Benjamin, who had even taken a sedative, sank into a deep sleep as if she had fainted.

“The test results are much worse than we anticipated.”

Sitting at the head of the bed, Lily recalled her conversation with Charles Dudley as she gazed at her mother’s face, still marked by tear stains.

“It seems to me she’s gotten better than before.”

Although Grace Benjamin had eventually suffered a seizure, it happened only once. She had remained perfectly fine even upon hearing her late husband’s name—the biggest trigger—so Lily couldn’t understand how her condition could have worsened.

“Simply not having a seizure doesn’t mean her condition has improved. While that’s often a positive sign, it doesn’t apply to Lady Grace Benjamin.”

“Despite ongoing treatment, Lady Grace Benjamin’s memory continues to deteriorate. That’s why she no longer reacts to the same stimuli—because she’s forgotten everything she once remembered.”

Charles Dudley continued with a bitter smile.

“Forgetfulness is a blessing from the gods to humans, but forgetting things one must remember is no blessing at all—it’s a dreadful calamity.”

The word “calamity” pierced Lily’s heart like a dagger, draining all color from her face. Seeing her look as though she might collapse at any moment, Charles Dudley fell silent for a moment before adding,

“She should still be able to attend her husband’s memorial service. Right now, it seems she remembers nothing except your name, so as long as we’re careful about that, it should be fine.”

Charles Dudley offered to grant her immediate permission to go out if she wished, but Lily remained silent. Taking her mother—whose condition was steadily worsening—to her father’s memorial felt selfish. Even her claim of doing it out of consideration for her parents, who had always shared such a close bond, was just a flimsy excuse. Truly thinking of her mother meant not taking her at all.

“No. If something goes wrong again during the memorial, it’ll be disastrous—I’ll skip it.”

Lily ultimately decided against bringing her mother to the memorial. Charles Dudley respected her decision but gently suggested she take her time to think it over, since there was still time left. Touched by his warm consideration, Lily gave him a faint smile.

Yet her heart remained heavy, weighed down by guilt. She had seen her mother suffer because of her own selfishness.
