When Charles Dudley asked, as if verifying he’d heard right, Lily nodded and asked in return,

Charles Dudley trailed off vaguely and flipped through the chart. His eyes scanning the pages didn’t look particularly serious. Since he hadn’t heard anything about her mother having issues lately, Lily assumed her mother’s condition must have improved.

Yet going out was another matter entirely. Attending the memorial of the very man whose death had triggered her mother’s mental instability—Lily couldn’t help but feel anxious and worried something might go wrong.

If there was even the slightest chance her mother’s condition might worsen, then she ought to give up. And yet, she couldn’t bring herself to do so—the image of her parents, whose bond had been so enviable to those around them, kept flashing before her eyes.

Since the topic had come up, Charles Dudley immediately stood, grabbing the white coat hanging on the back of his chair. His actions seemed almost as if he’d sensed Lily’s eagerness to know quickly, prompting her to bow her head instinctively.
