Harold began his explanation after confirming that Lily’s plate was completely empty. He recounted everything—from finding Olben hiding in the illegal gambling den to Frederick paying him to keep quiet.

Of course, he didn’t mention that he’d given Olben extra money to enjoy gambling a bit longer.

Lily’s calm expression finally crumbled the moment Frederick Benjamin’s name came up. Her face turned pale, and deep fear flickered in her eyes.

Just what had that bastard Frederick done to her to provoke such a reaction? Harold instantly wanted to hunt him down and beat him senseless. But knowing he couldn’t act on that urge, he sighed in frustration and asked Eric to bring Lily a glass of cold water with ice.

“Drink this.”

“…Thank you.”

Lily accepted the glass without protest and took a sip. The cold water helped clear her mind, pulling her back from the shock’s fog.

“It seems quite shocking to you that Frederick Benjamin gave money to Madam Megan’s husband.”

Lily, who had been staring blankly at her empty cup, slowly lifted her eyes.

“…Because I never expected it.”

Meeting his concerned golden eyes, she slowly parted her lips.

“You told me Madam Megan and your husband had nothing to do with each other… I believed you… So I’m just a little surprised, that’s all.”

Her voice still trembled slightly—she hadn’t fully recovered from the shock. Though the sight pained him, Harold felt more joy than worry, simply because she’d trusted his words. He’d never realized such a small thing could bring him so much happiness; the feeling was entirely unfamiliar.

“Do you still… believe your husband didn’t kill Madam Megan?”
