As Frederick drew closer, Lily tightened her grip on the paper knife and cried out desperately.

“Don’t come any nearer! If you get any closer… I’ll stab you!”

“Go ahead and stab me.”

Ignoring her threat, Frederick stepped right in front of Lily and placed the paper knife against his left chest, where his heart lay.

“This is where you stab, madam. Unless you strike precisely here, you won’t be able to kill me.”

Her hand holding the knife trembled even more than before—it was remarkable she could even hold the blade with such shaking.

“But if I die, there’ll be no one left to pay Lady Grace Benjamin’s hospital bills… Are you sure that’s fine?”

At this follow-up question, her emerald eyes filled with despair and trembled as much as her hand.

She just can’t do it. Sneering, Frederick seized her feeble hand—the one too weak even to wound him, let alone stab him.

With disheartening ease, Frederick snatched the knife away and gently smiled as he brushed aside the light brown strands of hair stuck to her sweat-drenched face.
