“You’re very late.”

In the dim, unlit room, a man’s voice startled Lily, who jerked her head around in surprise. There, sitting on the bed, was Frederick Benjamin. He was dressed in perfectly neat outdoor attire, as if ready to step out at any moment. His buttons were fastened all the way to his throat, making him look slightly stifled.

She had naturally assumed the room would be empty, so once the initial shock from the sudden voice subsided, irritation and an exasperated sigh took its place. Frowning, Lily asked somewhat sharply,

“What are you doing in a room without any light—and without its owner?”

Frederick let out a faint chuckle as he stood up and lit the candle on the nightstand. The soft glow of the candlelight, mingling with the light spilling in through the still-open door, pushed back the darkness in the bedroom just a little.

“Is this better now?”

“No. It isn’t. Leave my room at once.”

Lily pointed directly at the door, making her demand bluntly. Of course, she didn’t actually expect Frederick to obey her. The fact that he’d been waiting in her room—knowing she might not return at all—clearly meant he had something important to say.

She simply hoped he’d say it quickly and vanish. Yet instead of speaking, Frederick walked silently toward the door.

She’d assumed he was waiting because he absolutely needed to say something—but maybe not? Confused, Lily watched his movements until he shut the door, at which point her eyes widened in shock.

“What are you—”

Click. The sound of the lock reverberated through the bedroom, once again swallowed by darkness. Though the candle on the nightstand was lit, its flame was too small to illuminate more than its immediate surroundings. The space around Lily and Frederick was so dark that they could barely see each other’s faces, even standing just a few steps apart.

Yet through the gloom, she could distinctly feel Frederick’s intense gaze fixed on her—and fear suddenly gripped her. She reached again for the door to open it, but Frederick intercepted her, grabbing her wrist and preventing her from achieving her goal.

Frederick pulled her wrist sharply toward him and wrapped his arms around her. Startled into his embrace, Lily’s expression hardened instantly. Harold’s arms had been warm and comforting—but her husband’s felt like being dragged into a suffocating swamp.

“Let go!”
