It was only proper etiquette to inform guests of a party at least a week in advance—after all, that gave them time to prepare. The more formal the banquet, the earlier the invitation should arrive. So when Frederick told her just four days beforehand that she had to attend a royal-hosted party, Lily was utterly dumbfounded.

“Yes, I will.”

But Lily kept her feelings hidden and replied calmly. She now understood it wasn’t his fault for telling her so late—Frederick himself had only just received the invitation, and the one who’d invited him was clearly Earl Stacy.

What could Earl Stacy be thinking, inviting both Frederick and me to this party?

Not being able to discern the earl’s true intentions made her uneasy. Having personally witnessed that beneath his seemingly kind and benevolent exterior flowed the blood of a cold-hearted schemer, she felt even more disturbed.

There were many other reasons she didn’t want to attend the party, but unfortunately, Lily had no right to refuse. It seemed Frederick had already agreed to attend, and unless something truly unavoidable happened—like a natural disaster or breaking a bone—she absolutely had to go.

So Lily gave up thinking about the royal-hosted party altogether. Frederick or Samantha would surely take care of selecting her dress and accessories for the event, and the servants would handle her styling.

There was nothing for her to do. She merely had to sit quietly like a doll and let them do as they pleased.

After Frederick’s final notice about attending the royal-hosted party, not a single word passed between him and Lily. An awkward, heavy silence settled between them, but Lily actually found it rather comfortable—she had no desire to hold a long conversation with a husband who treated her worse than a stranger.

Apparently, Frederick felt the same. Even after arriving at Viscount Benjamin’s mansion, he stepped out of the carriage alone without so much as a word—no “We’ve arrived” or “You may get down now.”

Instead of being escorted by her husband, Lily alighted from the carriage with the coachman’s help. She eagerly wanted to rush straight to her bedroom, take off her heavy dress, and rest—but another obstacle was waiting for her.

“What on earth is all this!”

It was Samantha. In her hand was the receipt delivered by a staff member from Ettua Boutique while her son and daughter-in-law were out. Assuming it must relate to their earlier mention of having somewhere important to go today, Samantha glanced at the receipt without much thought—only to gape in shock at the amount.

“What kind of clothing costs this much money? Are you out of your mind? You don’t earn a single coin yourself and live off what my son worked hard to earn—how dare you recklessly spend such a huge sum? Are you deliberately trying to ruin this family!”

Samantha’s shrill, furious voice rang sharply through the air. The servants had already fled, afraid of getting caught in the crossfire, leaving only Samantha and Lily in the corridor.
