Lily had come along because Frederick had asked her to accompany him, and she thought it’d be good to hear what Earl Stacy and Frederick were discussing. But she regretted it less than ten minutes after meeting the earl.

It was because she could barely understand the conversation between Frederick and Earl Stacy. Though she occasionally recognized a word or two, it was difficult to connect them with the stream of unfamiliar terms that followed.

She’d always thought herself well-read and knowledgeable, yet when it came to business matters, she was completely clueless.

The one who rescued Lily, who had been sitting there as still as a sack of barley, was none other than Countess Stacy.

“How about you stop listening to this dull business talk and come with me to admire the garden instead? They say the spring flowers have bloomed beautifully.”

Pretending to be friendly with the countess while strolling through the garden seemed better than enduring incomprehensible business chatter.

“That sounds like a good idea, Lily. I’ll call for you as soon as our discussion is over, so go ahead without worrying.”

As if sensing Lily’s hesitation, Earl Stacy spoke up. Since Frederick also urged her to go, Lily pondered a little longer before nodding and standing.

“Please call me as soon as your discussion ends.”

After Lily left with the countess, a brief silence settled over the study. Earl Stacy lifted his teacup as though to soothe his dry throat, and Frederick, who had been staring blankly at him, spoke the moment the earl set the cup down.

“Now, please tell me.”

A sharp glint flashed in his eyes behind the polished lenses.

“There’s something you couldn’t say because your wife was present, isn’t there?”

Earl Stacy deliberately set his cup down with an audible clink and asked Frederick, “Why do you think that?”
