“Excuse me, my lord.”

Early in the morning, the servant who had come to attend to his master paused upon entering the bedroom and spotting Harold, slumped sideways against the armrest of the sofa. The clothes left on the bed for him to change into earlier still lay untouched, since he had claimed he’d dress himself. The pillows and blankets showed no sign of disturbance either, indicating he had stayed awake all night.

Harold might have had his reasons for remaining sleepless, but one thing was certain—they weren’t good ones. His expression, shadowed as if draped in the veil of night, made that obvious enough. The grim atmosphere discouraged the servant from speaking freely.

Yet he couldn’t hesitate indefinitely.

“Shall I prepare your wash water?”

Breakfast would be served soon, so the servant mustered his courage to ask. But there was no reply. Harold merely stared blankly at the ceiling, as if something had glued his gaze in place.

Just as the servant turned to leave quietly, deciding it best not to disturb him further, the awaited answer came.

“Cold water, please.”

“Yes, sir!”

With a brisk reply, the servant left the room and returned shortly thereafter with a basin and towel.

Splashing his face with cold water to clear his foggy mind, Harold gazed at his reflection in the basin and wiped away the droplets clinging to his chin.

Grace Benjamin’s worsening condition was due to Frederick Benjamin.

He had suspected the man had tampered with her snacks, but never imagined such a despicable prank.

Harold was both astonished and puzzled.

If Grace Benjamin were to die, Lily’s sole vulnerability would vanish—so why would Frederick do something like this?
