Swish—the sound of the door closing echoed like a reverberation through the quiet hospital room. Grace Benjamin glared at Harold from the corner of her bed, clutching an ugly monkey doll tightly to her chest. She looked just like a cat with its fur standing on end.

The first time they met, she had warmly called him “older brother,” so why was she wary of him now at their second meeting? Harold, puzzled yet gentle, smiled kindly and calmly met her gaze.

Perhaps it worked—her wariness, visible in eyes the same green as Lily’s, gradually softened. Grace Benjamin glanced briefly at the firmly closed hospital door, then parted her tightly pressed lips.

“Mister… who are you?”

She wasn’t pretending not to know—she genuinely didn’t remember. And to call him “Mister”? Harold’s eyebrows lifted slightly at this unfamiliar form of address, one he’d never heard before.

He’d known that Grace Benjamin’s mind had been unstable since the accident two years ago, but he hadn’t expected her memory to have deteriorated so severely that she couldn’t recall meeting him just a week prior. It wasn’t as if nothing major had happened—it was precisely because something had occurred that he felt slightly flustered.

“My name is Harold. I’m Lily’s friend.”

Having finally understood why Grace Benjamin distrusted him, Harold introduced himself politely. He didn’t bother mentioning his surname—he had no intention of holding her to formalities or etiquette.

“Lily….”

Grace muttered her daughter’s name, which had vanished from her memory, then suddenly beamed and clapped her hands.

“So you’re my sister’s boyfriend!”

Harold’s lips curled into a faint smile as his status abruptly rose—from “strange mister” to “Lily’s boyfriend.”

If Grace Benjamin had forgotten Lily entirely, continuing the conversation would’ve been impossible, but fortunately, that didn’t seem to be the case. Perhaps memories formed since the fresh start of her recollection remained intact. Or maybe, because Lily was her beloved daughter whom she’d borne through pain, even if she forgot the fact itself, she couldn’t forget the person.

“Where’s my sister? Did she go to the bathroom?”

As Grace Benjamin rose from the bed, showing signs of wanting to go look for Lily, Harold gently grasped her shoulder.
