Lily burrowed deep into her blanket as though she’d been thrown naked into the street on a bitterly cold winter day when snow fell thick and fast. Yet her body wouldn’t warm up at all. Instead, she felt an even sharper chill—so intense her teeth chattered—and her small frame trembled like an aspen leaf.

It hurts. It hurts so much….

The thought, too weak to become a sound, swirled inside her mouth before fading away. In its place, tears overflowed and soaked her pillowcase. Even the blanket was drenched in the cold sweat she’d shed.

“You must regain consciousness to take the medicine….”

“…Waking her up might….”

“…actually worsen her condition….”

People nearby seemed to be talking, but their voices buzzed in her ears like mosquitoes, making it impossible for Lily to understand them clearly. Her pounding headache didn’t help either—and that was on top of her unbearable physical pain.

Amidst it all, her throat grew unbearably dry, and Lily weakly licked her parched lips, cracked from the high fever.

Water. Please give me water….

But again, her wish died before it could become a voice, never reaching anyone around her. She lacked even the strength to lift a finger to drink on her own. All she could manage was to moisten her lips—and even that was growing harder by the second. Still, so desperately thirsty, Lily silently cried out for water.

Perhaps the heavens took pity on her plea. Something cool and soft touched her dry lips, and soon refreshing water flowed into her mouth. Lily drank greedily, like a traveler who’d wandered days through a blazing desert before finally stumbling upon an oasis.

She gulped so hastily that some of the water spilled down her chin before she could swallow it. But Lily didn’t feel the slightest shame or embarrassment over spilling water like a child. Instead, she clung to her caretaker out of regret for not drinking even more.

Sensing Lily’s wish, the other person kept offering her water until she was satisfied. Having drunk her fill, Lily finally gathered enough strength to slowly lift her leaden eyelids, as if pushing aside heavy stones.

Her vision remained cloudy as though veiled in fog, making it hard to distinguish objects clearly—but strangely, she could see the face of the person right in front of her with perfect clarity.

“…Daddy?”
