The witness interrogation was over. Lily checked the time as she stepped out of the interrogation room. 1:30 p.m. Since she had arrived at the police station around 11:30 a.m., it meant she had been interrogated for nearly two hours.

Because of that, she was late for her mother’s visiting hours, but she had firmly secured Frederick Benjamin’s ankle. With this, he wouldn’t be able to pull any strange stunts for the time being. Moreover, she might even uncover what exactly had driven that man to commit such an act.

As she turned away, hoping the investigator would uncover the truth as soon as possible, Harold came into view, leaning against a window. Startled, Lily quickly approached him.

“How long have you been standing here? Surely you haven’t been waiting here since I went into the interrogation room?”

Harold answered only with a silent smile. His reaction, tantamount to confirmation, left Lily’s mouth hanging open in astonishment.

“How did you know when I’d come out that you’d just keep waiting here?”

“I didn’t know when you’d come out—that’s precisely why I waited. Though I didn’t expect it to take this long.”

Harold shrugged slightly, looking a bit embarrassed. His eyes, catching the slanted sunlight, sparkled even more brilliantly.

“Judging by how long it took, you must have had quite a lot to discuss with the investigator.”

His gaze, clearly asking her to recount every detail of the conversation, felt familiar—because just moments ago, the investigator had looked at her with the exact same expression.

“Are you saying… that Viscount Benjamin hired his younger brother to kill the victim?”

Near the end of the interrogation, when Lily dropped her bombshell, the investigator had been visibly startled and repeated her words in disbelief. Though his tone remained gentle and polite, his eyes grew cold and sharp as he stared at her, silently urging her to reveal everything she knew.

“Actually…”

Since this was exactly what she had wanted, Lily willingly told him everything she knew: starting from the death of Olben’s wife, Megan, to the fact that her husband Olben was a prime suspect; that Frederick Benjamin had given him money and ordered him to hide in the gambling den; and even her belief that Frederick Benjamin had sent Brian there.
