It came back with words even harder than what he had thrown out. It felt more like she’d been given homework. That was exactly Ra In’s intention—she’d passed the ball to him because she didn’t want to reveal her own weakness: her awkwardness with emotions.

Song Kang wasn’t unaware of her ambiguous attitude, but even that, if he had to bear it, he was more than willing to do so.

They weren’t burdens to each other. The two accepted their “homework” and moved forward according to their own schedules.

The moment she stepped out of the office, a chill pierced sharply through her body. Ra In hunched her shoulders and quickened her steps. Just then, Joo Hyuk called again. Ra In hesitated for a moment.

Why am I hesitating…?

It seemed like the lingering effect of the “homework” Song Kang had given her. Ra In pulled herself together and answered the call. Joo Hyuk asked her to have dinner together.

Back when they’d both worked at the prosecution office, they’d shared lunch and dinner nearly every day—it was true they’d grown distant lately.

The heavily overcast sky looked ready to pour rain any second, and that uneasy premonition proved correct. Ra In hunched further and walked briskly through the downpour.

She barely managed to catch a taxi in the foul weather. All the way home, she kept hoping the rain would stop.

The rain hadn’t let up by the time the taxi reached her apartment, and as soon as she stepped out, she hurried forward—only to drop her phone on the ground.

“Oh no—what do I do?”

Ra In picked up her phone, lying pathetically on the wet pavement.

She couldn’t feel the falling rain anymore—was it because the winter rain had numbed her completely, or because someone had held an umbrella over her?

She raised her head, and at the edge of her vision stood Joo Hyuk, holding an umbrella.

“Oh? Senior.”
