Ra In found herself slightly more nervous than usual on her way to the meeting place. It also meant she now had something she truly wanted. No matter how deeply she breathed or how hard she tried to calm her mind, she couldn’t easily regain control.

“Hey, miss, should I drop you off here?”

The taxi driver’s voice snapped Ra In back to attention. She felt relieved she hadn’t taken the subway or a bus—she’d nearly missed her destination entirely.

“Oh, yes. Thank you.”

Ra In walked steadily toward the massive building, her expression lost in thought. She stopped in front of the large revolving door and lowered her head deeply.

She’d always known she was small, which was precisely why she’d made a habit of holding her head high—but today, she felt even smaller than usual.

“Aren’t you going in? It’s almost time for your appointment.”

A low, deep voice startled her, and Ra In quickly lifted her head. Glancing at her reflection in the glass of the revolving door, she saw Director Na Song Gang standing right behind her.

That was why she hadn’t turned around. She feared he might see her in this weakened state—or worse, realize she now harbored expectations of him.

No matter how hard Ra In tried to hide it, he saw right through her. He hadn’t anticipated she’d developed any desires—that possibility had completely slipped his mind—but he could clearly tell she’d lost some of her usual inner strength.

“Once you step through this door, you’ll enter another world.”

His sturdy frame more than covered her slender form.

Ra In, who had always felt alone in the world, was experiencing for the first time the reassurance of someone solidly standing behind her—and she couldn’t quite define the overwhelming emotion surging through her right now.

His meaningful words lent strength to Ra In’s steps. She finally moved forward, and Song Kang matched her pace as they walked together.

Once through the revolving door, Song Kang took the lead.

“This way, please.”

He headed toward the VIP elevator. Though the place was unfamiliar to Ra In, following him didn’t feel uncomfortable or intimidating.

As if it had been waiting for them, the elevator sat idle on the first floor, and he stepped right in.

Ra In followed him inside. She wasn’t used to trailing after anyone, but perhaps due to her current state, it didn’t feel unpleasant.

Song Kang pressed the button for the topmost floor—the panel simply labeled “VIP” with no floor number. As the doors closed, a quiet stillness settled over the private space they now shared.

Their reflections appeared on the mirrored elevator doors, and Ra In immediately searched for somewhere else to look, afraid their eyes might meet.

Every time Ra In acted this way, Song Kang couldn’t help but feel amused—he had to actively suppress the smile tugging at his lips.

Thanks to her averted gaze, he could quietly study her. Prosecutor Jin Ra In—“strong outside, soft inside” perfectly described her.

Ra In, glancing around to check when the elevator would arrive, inadvertently met his eyes through the reflection on the doors. Song Kang didn’t look away, and Ra In struggled not to show how flustered she was.

Just then, the elevator chimed and reached the top floor.

Ra In quickly lowered her head and hurried to exit—but Song Kang caught her left wrist before she could bump into the still-closed doors.

Startled, Ra In whipped around and instinctively raised her right hand—not to strike him, but the sudden, large gesture naturally drew Song Kang’s eyes toward it.

“The doors haven’t even opened yet.”

Only then did the elevator doors slide open behind her.

“I understand. Please let go.”

Song Kang released his grip as she asked—but her body, tense and braced, immediately lurched backward. He swiftly caught her, steadying her against his chest. It was a move he’d clearly anticipated.

Of course she’d fallen back—it was only natural when she’d been holding her body so rigidly and then suddenly relaxed.

The elevator doors closed again. Their bodies, now pressed close together, left Ra In breathless.

Seeing Ra In’s ears turn crimson, Song Kang fought back another smile. But with an important negotiation ahead, he couldn’t afford to annoy her over something as trivial as a grin—so he held it in once more.

“Shall I let go?”

This time, it was Song Kang who asked—but Ra In heard nothing. Without answering, she sharply turned her head away.

Song Kang gently lifted her upright, then pressed the button to open the doors, giving her a clear path to escape.

Ra In quickly stepped out of the elevator and released the breath she’d been holding.

She walked ahead as if she knew exactly where she was going—and only then did Song Kang finally allow himself a small smile as he watched her retreating figure.

“Prosecutor Jin Ra In, this way.”

At the sound of his voice, Ra In realized her mistake, halted mid-step, and turned back toward him. She’d have been deeply embarrassed if he’d been staring directly at her—but instead, he’d already turned away and was walking toward the reserved business room.

Ra In followed him, carefully maintaining an appropriate distance. It seemed they were destined to face this together, after all…

At the door, a staff member opened it and ushered them inside, placed a sealed contract on the table, bowed politely, and left.

Ra In hesitated before taking her seat at the negotiation table. Today’s agreement was anything but trivial—even for her.

Seeing her pause, Song Kang silently pulled out her chair, wordlessly inviting her to sit. Ra In kept her eyes forward, walked to her seat, and sat down. Song Kang took his seat as well.

“There’s something I’d like to clarify upfront. It’s one way I’ll support Prosecutor Jin Ra In. Attorney Cha Hae In will serve as your legal representative in your reinstatement lawsuit. If you can find someone equally capable, you’re free to choose as you wish.”

Though he wasn’t particularly thrilled about using Attorney Cha Hae In from Taesung’s Legal Affairs Department, he knew finding someone of her caliber elsewhere would be difficult.

Taesung’s Legal Affairs Department was known for gathering only the nation’s top-tier legal professionals—so much so that major law firms competed fiercely to recruit anyone from there.

More than anything, he was somewhat reassured that Song Kang wasn’t obsessed solely with his own agenda.

“I’ll prepare the arguments myself.”

“Then do so, as Prosecutor Jin Ra In wishes.”

It was the reaction he’d expected. Song Kang casually turned his attention to the sealed contract, opened it, and handed one copy to Ra In.

The moment she took the document, Ra In’s expression instantly grew serious—the same look Song Kang had seen the first day he met her.

True to form, she examined every word without missing a single detail. Even without speaking, the sheer intensity of her focus was palpable as her eyes moved silently across the page.

To Song Kang, Ra In looked utterly captivating. Rarely distracted during negotiations, he found his focus momentarily shaken by her.

The terms “Party A” and “Party B” in the contract made Ra In distinctly uncomfortable—especially since she was clearly “Party B,” and the phrasing stung sharply.

“If the contract expires only when both parties achieve their goals, does that mean it continues indefinitely if either side fails to accomplish their objective?”

“Yes, exactly.”

Ra In tilted her head slightly, then resumed reading the contract.

“Listen while you read. Though it’s not written in the contract, I’d like to be able to reach you immediately.”

“I don’t check my phone often.”

“That’s precisely why I’m telling you now—you’ll need to start checking it more often from now on.”

Ra In lifted her eyes to meet his. Her gaze was sharp, almost challenging—as if silently demanding, “Why should I?”

Just from her expression, Song Kang could easily guess what she was thinking.

“Prosecutor Jin Ra In, how did communication work at your former office?”

“Staff would alert me via internal calls, or someone would phone my desk number.”

“We don’t have those systems now. We have no choice but to rely on mobile phones—I’d appreciate it if you honored this request.”

Ra In paused for a moment, then wordlessly returned her attention to the contract.

“You haven’t answered yet.”

His firm tone made her inwardly flinch, though she showed no sign of it outwardly.

It wasn’t just his tone that made her hesitate—his reasoning was sound, and she had no valid counterargument, leaving her momentarily speechless.

“I don’t make promises I can’t keep. I’ll consider it while finishing the contract.”

With that, Ra In bought herself a little more time. Song Kang resolved to wait patiently—at least until she signed.

“If the confidentiality clause is breached, will the contract be terminated?”

“Of course not. There’s only one way to terminate this agreement.”

Ra In stared at him suspiciously for a moment, then hurriedly resumed reading—her eyes finally settling on the last line.

‘The contract is nullified upon relinquishing one’s desired objective.’ No clause bound her more tightly or left her with less room to retreat.

“If you ever want to cancel the contract, you can do so—simply by giving up.”

Giving up on returning as a prosecutor… She hadn’t even considered that possibility until now.

“The terms in this contract—and everything I just mentioned about communication, responsiveness, and especially giving answers—can you accept them all?”

Ra In hesitated briefly. She felt certain this agreement could pave the way for her future.

“I’ll… make an effort.”

Without waiting for Song Kang to prompt her, she compromised on the wording, quickly wrote her name, and signed next to it.

Song Kang was slightly surprised by how decisively she’d committed without raising any objections. He barely managed to conceal the look of astonishment spreading across his face.

She’d really signed it.

Overcome with quiet satisfaction, Song Kang rose from his seat and stood beside her. He leaned down to examine the contract, then pulled a personal seal from his inner pocket and stamped it next to his signature.

Thus, between them was forged a promise that could not be broken—unless one dared sacrifice the most important thing in their life.

Ra In felt just as unreal about it all. She’d never dreamed she’d end up in such a relationship with Song Kang.

Just as she began to feel dazed, she noticed his outstretched hand—large and steady as always. Feeling it proper to reciprocate, she stood and took it.

“Let’s do our best.”

Ra In tried to withdraw her hand without speaking—but he didn’t let go.

“Didn’t we just sign a contract?”

Ra In looked at him, confused, unsure what he found wrong.

“I won’t wait long for your answer.”

She remained standing there, expression blank. She’d heard rumors that within Taesung, Director Na Song Gang’s word ranked just below Chairman Na’s—but she refused to be swayed so easily.

“My word can’t possibly be law.”

As if he’d read her mind, Ra In felt a sharp twinge in her chest.

“Even if you don’t automatically say ‘yes,’ you still need to give some kind of response. I don’t tolerate having to repeat myself.”

Ra In stayed silent, staring back at him like a mute—partly out of stubbornness.

“There are many paths to reach our destination. Will you waste your energy challenging me all the way, or will you choose to move forward efficiently together? I trust the intelligent Prosecutor Jin Ra In to make the right judgment.”

Song Kang released her hand, picked up the contract, and coolly walked out of the business room.

After the door clicked shut behind him, Ra In’s legs gave way, and she slumped into her chair with a deep sigh.

She’d been worried he might back out of the deal—and yet here she was again, acting recklessly without a plan…

Na Song Gang had now become someone Ra In desperately, truly needed.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
