Yoon came home dragging her exhausted body, and the moment she saw Ok Soon and Ho Sik, her eyes welled up.
Seeing their wrinkled faces made her heart ache—her only granddaughter’s engagement ceremony, and they hadn’t even been able to attend.
“The engagement went well, right? Did they do your makeup there? You’re completely unrecognizable now. Our granddaughter really looks like Miss Korea.”
Ok Soon forced an even brighter smile as she warmly welcomed her.
“But why are you crying?”
Ok Soon’s wrinkled, rough hand gently stroked Yoon’s cheek. Ho Sik just stood there, clearing his throat awkwardly.
“You and Grandpa should’ve come to the engagement ceremony…”
Yoon lowered her head. It was utterly infuriating that her real family couldn’t even attend her own engagement.
“If we’d shown up there, it would’ve only dragged down your dignity for no reason.”
Ok Soon muttered, looking down at the floor.
“What are you talking about? How could it drag down my dignity?”
Yoon held Ok Soon’s hand, her voice filled with distress.
“Don’t even mention us. And don’t tell your fiancé about us for now, either.”
Ok Soon wiped Yoon’s tears away with her sleeve.
“Your fiancé is that actor, Cha Kang Hyun, right?”
Ho Sik, who had been standing with his hands clasped behind his back and staring out the window, finally spoke.
“Yes.”
“But people are saying Cha Kang Hyun’s a womanizer. They say he’s got a nasty temper, too.”
Ho Sik had asked around about Cha Kang Hyun and, after hearing all those rumors, only grew more worried.
“Lots of those rumors are nonsense.”
“If he’s that good-looking, doesn’t that just mean he’s got more trouble with women?”
Ho Sik’s face was filled entirely with worry—and then he slapped his chest again in frustration.
“Ugh…”
Because of his own foolishness falling for a scam, it felt like his innocent granddaughter’s fate was getting tangled up yet again. Ho Sik’s chest tightened with guilt.
No matter how he thought about it, those people weren’t the type who’d ever send Yoon off to a good life.

Ho Sik muttered another self-reproach and walked into his room. Yoon watched his retreating back with deep concern.

Ok Soon wrapped the ring box in a cloth and opened the refrigerator door.
“I doubt anyone would break into our house, but I still feel uneasy. I’ll put it here. Who’d ever think there’s a ring in the fridge?”
“Yeah, that makes sense.”
Yoon and Ok Soon looked at each other and smiled brightly.
“But have you eaten yet?”
“I ate something, but I’m still hungry.”
“Alright, go wash up quickly. I’ll boil your favorite cheonggukjang for you.”
“That sounds delicious. I’ll wash up and come right out.”
Yoon gave Ok Soon a bright smile and headed into the bathroom. Watching Yoon’s back, Ok Soon’s eyes reddened again, and she quietly wiped away a tear.
To the elderly couple, Yoon was their joyful, beautiful granddaughter—but to Yoon, they were nothing but a burden.
Yoon was truly an admirable child. They’d never been able to properly send her to a cram school, yet she studied diligently on her own, earned a scholarship in college, and even worked part-time jobs without ever asking them for money.

“It’s… about the last Korean evaluation. I just don’t understand why I got a B.”
Min Jung hadn’t slept for days after receiving a B on the critique she’d stayed up nights writing. She was certain she’d met all the requirements, so she couldn’t figure out where she’d lost points.
“The structure of your essay didn’t meet the scoring criteria…”
“But I believe I fulfilled all the requirements.”
Min Jung cut Yoon off mid-sentence.
“The conclusion didn’t properly address the issue raised in the introduction. And also…”
“Isn’t ‘properly addressing’ way too subjective?”
As Min Jung kept rudely interrupting, Yoon started to feel her temper rising.
“That’s exactly why it has to meet the objective criteria we set.”
“Isn’t that just playing word games? I can’t accept it. I couldn’t even properly study for my other subjects because I was so focused on that assignment.”
“Min Jung, a critique means…”
“Ugh, fine.”
Suddenly, Min Jung cut Yoon off again and spun around to leave.
“Lee Min Jung!”
When Yoon called out, Min Jung bolted out of the faculty office as if running away.
As a brand-new teacher who’d just started teaching students, Yoon was getting her real initiation after handing out the evaluation scores.

But teaching was far from easy—it demanded a sense of mission beyond just a job.
