It was when spring was fading that he first sensed something was off.

Her period was late that month. Since it often happened when she wasn’t feeling well, she assumed it was just that again. But after another month and a half passed, she decided to use the pregnancy test she’d kept stocked at the pharmacy, just in case.

When Hae Yeon checked the test results with trembling hands, she unconsciously called out a name—even though she was alone at home.

— Mr. Do Ha!

Outside the window, the world shimmered in a blur of car headlights. Within that haze, Hae Yeon’s pale face flickered into view, so stark that Do Ha couldn’t bear to look and closed his eyes.

Do Ha dragged his palm down his face. His forehead was damp—with sweat or rain, he couldn’t tell.

Standing dazed in the hallway, staring blankly out the window, he sensed someone behind him and turned to find Dr. Moon standing there.

“It’s a temporary shock caused by extreme stress. She should regain consciousness with time.”

Do Ha gave a small nod. Dr. Moon, his hair already streaked with white, studied Do Ha’s face. Dressed in clothes still damp from however long he’d stood in the rain outside, Do Ha looked unmistakably exhausted.

The hospital room hung in silence. Rain still fell steadily, and the occasional soft beep of machines punctuated the stillness—but that was all. Though two other people sat in Hae Yeon’s room besides her, no one spoke, deepening the quiet to an almost unbearable degree.

Eventually, it was Dr. Moon who broke the silence.

“Did Madam remember something?”

“…….”

Though the question wasn’t difficult, Do Ha couldn’t answer. He simply lifted his trembling hand and grasped Hae Yeon’s small one. Her weak fingers offered no resistance, falling limply into his.
