My Husband's Lover (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
After dinner, while rinsing the dishes, Do Ha quietly approached from behind and buried his face in her hair. At that warm, natural gesture, Hae Yeon felt a deep sense of relief.
“I said I’d do it.”
His sweet voice sounded pleasant to her ears.
“The dishwasher handles everything already. But if you still feel bad, could you make me some tea?”
“Sure. Next time, I’ll take care of the dishes.”
“Okay.”
After finishing the dishes, the two sat down at the dining table. The paper-shaded lamp on the table cast a soft glow throughout the kitchen. As Hae Yeon sat, Do Ha came over and placed his hand gently on her shoulder.
“I feel like I haven’t been able to do much for you lately.”
He spoke in a soft murmur, and as his hands moved, Hae Yeon felt refreshingly cool. Do Ha’s massage skills had clearly improved over time—his hands moved deftly from her neck down to her shoulders, back, and scalp.
“Feel better?”
“Yes. Thank you.”
When Do Ha handed her the tea, a fresh fragrance spread around the table. Even though it was dried grapefruit, its scent was delightfully crisp. As she took a sip, he watched her with quiet intensity.
“There’s an event in Incheon next Thursday. I think we should both attend—but if you’re too tired, I can go alone.”
“Really? I’ll come.”
Truthfully, she would have declined under normal circumstances. Such events were exhausting and hardly necessary to attend. But Hae Yeon now thought it best to go, just in case she might pick up some small clue.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay?”
“Of course. It’s been a while since I’ve seen people—might be a nice change of pace.”
She smiled faintly, and Do Ha’s gaze flowed warmly toward her.
“Isn’t managing household chores tiring for you? We really should hire a housekeeper.”
“Are we back to this again? No, thank you.”
Hae Yeon grinned and shook her head, prompting Do Ha to chuckle softly.
“You’re so stubborn. But if it ever gets too much, just say the word.”
As always, he ended with those words. Her husband often brought up hiring help. Ever since their honeymoon, he’d urged her to get assistance, especially since in his family, as many as five or six staff members routinely helped with housework. Hae Yeon had always refused, citing discomfort with having strangers around.
Do Ha gazed at her affectionately. Hae Yeon felt a small surge of happiness. As they chatted amiably, they soon finished their tea, and Do Ha stood up.
“I’ll go out for a workout.”
“Again today? You just came back from a business trip—why not rest for once?”
Already heading toward the dressing room, Do Ha turned at Hae Yeon’s worried question.
“It’s fine. If I skip even a single day, my body starts itching for it.”
With a gentle smile and a tender farewell, he left through the front door. Watching his receding figure through the floor-to-ceiling glass, Hae Yeon reflected.
Do Ha had been going out regularly at night for the past few months, claiming it was for exercise. Of course, he had always enjoyed working out—but as his company grew, he’d become too busy to do it often.
Yet lately, he’d begun leaving home regularly after work, again citing exercise.
Until now, Hae Yeon had never questioned his behavior. But after hearing Lee Su Rin’s words, she now wondered—was Do Ha’s regular evening outings truly just for exercise, or was it somehow connected to the recent incident?
One thing was certain.
—”Even if Mother objects, I will marry her.”
The low, resolute voice from years ago suddenly echoed in her mind.
* * *
Hae Yeon was driving toward Daechi-dong. She was heading to her in-laws’ home because of her father-in-law, Cha Gi Jung. He particularly enjoyed side dishes prepared personally by his second daughter-in-law, and because she loved Do Ha, Hae Yeon willingly cooked for his family.
The family estate was more than just impressive. Its stately, imposing exterior was striking enough, but the interior was even grander. Recalling how slightly intimidated she’d felt during her first visit to this house for greetings, Hae Yeon stiffened as the front door opened.
An unfamiliar yet familiar face.
Lee Su Rin.
She was there.
At her husband’s family home.
Hae Yeon was flustered—shocked to see Lee Su Rin so unexpectedly at the main house, and bewildered by how calmly and confidently she smiled toward her.
“Chairwoman, the younger madam has arrived.”
As Hae Yeon entered the living room, Director Choi announced. She was the personal secretary to her mother-in-law, Chairwoman Yoon Myeong Gil.
“I see.”
Chairwoman Yoon’s calm voice came through, and beside her sat Hae Yeon’s father-in-law, former Superintendent Cha. The two were always together whenever Chairwoman Yoon had no official engagements.
“You’ve come just in time. I’d like you to meet a guest.”
Today, Chairwoman Yoon’s tone was unusually gentle. There was always a clear difference in how she treated her second daughter-in-law when guests were present versus when they weren’t.
While exchanging greetings with her in-laws, Hae Yeon briefly met eyes with Lee Su Rin but remained silent. Since she didn’t yet understand the situation, any rash action would be unwise.

“Su Rin, this is Do Ha’s wife, Min Hae Yeon.”
Chairwoman Yoon addressed Lee Su Rin warmly. Hae Yeon had suspected from her profile that Lee Su Rin had ties to the family, but she hadn’t expected such obvious closeness.
“Hello.”
Lee Su Rin greeted her calmly, her neat and elegant appearance suiting her well.
“Yes, hello.”
As Hae Yeon replied, Chairwoman Yoon introduced Su Rin with a warm smile—an expression rarely seen on her otherwise.
“This is Lee Su Rin, Do Ha’s childhood friend’s younger sister. They’ve been close since they were little.”
At last, Lee Su Rin’s identity became clear. She was closer to Do Ha than Hae Yeon had imagined. Now it made sense why Su Rin addressed him so familiarly—and it was evident she also maintained close ties with Do Ha’s entire family.
If Lee Su Rin could visit Daechi-dong so naturally, perhaps Chairwoman Yoon Myeong Gil tacitly supported the relationship between Do Ha and Su Rin.
Hae Yeon’s concern wasn’t unfounded. Chairwoman Yoon had early on designated her younger son, Cha Do Ha, as the corporate heir—bypassing her elder son and Daechi-dong managing director Cha Do Hoon.
When Do Ha insisted on marrying Hae Yeon—a woman orphaned and without connections—his parents had never once accepted her as their daughter-in-law and had wished for their divorce.
Having endured four years of her in-laws’ disapproval and quiet pressure, Hae Yeon was accustomed to such situations, so she quickly calmed her startled heart.
Lee Su Rin elegantly lifted the corners of her eyes. Remembering how just days ago she’d claimed to be her husband’s lover, Hae Yeon nearly laughed at her shameless expression.
“Su Rin, how long has it been since you last visited this house?”
It was her mother-in-law. Chairwoman Yoon Myeong Gil wasn’t normally one for casual small talk. As head of the massive Gil Myeong Group, she maintained her professional demeanor even at home. Realizing this ordinary question was clearly intentional, Hae Yeon instead offered a serene smile.
“It must have been around the time Do Ha got married.”
This time it was her father-in-law. According to him, Lee Su Rin had visited the main house as recently as Do Ha’s wedding—meaning she’d been coming and going from Daechi-dong for quite some time.
Confident in her position, Su Rin maintained a relaxed smile, and Chairwoman Yoon responded with unusual warmth. Hae Yeon found herself wondering why she was even here, having never once received such a kind look from Chairwoman Yoon despite four years of effort.
The familiar, affectionate atmosphere made her feel more like a guest than a daughter-in-law. The gentle side of Chairwoman Yoon—the side she’d never witnessed during her time living as part of this family—left a bitter taste.
“It really has been that long already, hasn’t it?”
Responding to the wistful question in a matching tone, Lee Su Rin replied.
“Fate is strange. No one could have predicted things would turn out like this.”
Former Superintendent Cha sounded regretful. Though his words were fragmented, anyone present could easily infer their meaning: Chairwoman Yoon and her husband had originally wanted Lee Su Rin as Do Ha’s wife.
“If only you hadn’t gone abroad for studies back then—you and Do Ha would have made a lovely match. What were you so obsessed with studying anyway?”
At Cha Gi Jung’s affectionate reproach, Lee Su Rin playfully crinkled the corners of her eyes.
“Father… we have a daughter-in-law here already.”
She feigned embarrassment with a coy smile. To someone unaware, it might have seemed considerate—but Hae Yeon, knowing her true intentions, was utterly exasperated.
While Chairwoman Yoon and her husband briefly exchanged words, Lee Su Rin turned her gaze toward Hae Yeon. For a moment, Hae Yeon almost laughed. Su Rin was staring at her so boldly, as if inspecting her face.
See? This is how Do Ha’s parents treat me.
Meeting that unfiltered look head-on, Hae Yeon didn’t look away—she understood exactly why Su Rin wore that expression, and why she’d been so confident calling her out just days ago.
‘So that’s it—you’ve got solid backing.’
Although Hae Yeon’s visit to Daechi-dong today was coincidental, Su Rin must have known she was coming. Hae Yeon always called ahead before visiting the main house. Realizing this, Hae Yeon decided she had no reason to stay any longer and stood up.
“I’ll go check on the kitchen, Mother.”
“Alright.”
During her newlywed days, she would have stubbornly remained seated through such uncomfortable moments. But she’d since realized staying wouldn’t change anything—in fact, it would only invite criticism. So now, there was no need.
In the kitchen, Hae Yeon handed over the side dishes she’d prepared to the housekeeper, checked what former Superintendent Cha might need, and then returned to the living room.
“I’ve restocked what you mentioned last week, Father. I’ll come again next week.”
As the younger daughter-in-law quickly rose to leave, Gi Jung opened his mouth as if to say something. Just as Hae Yeon pretended not to notice and stood to go, a calm voice came from across the room.
“I’ve enjoyed the tea, Mother.”
Su Rin also stood up, prompting Hae Yeon to glance at her sideways. Did they really need to leave together as if they’d just met for the first time today? Su Rin’s purpose was obvious.
“Of course, Su Rin. Feel free to visit anytime. I’ll have Do Ha call you on the weekend.”
“Yes. Thank you, Mother.”
At Su Rin’s poised and respectful demeanor, Gi Jung looked pleased. A scholar by background, he was the complete opposite of his wife, Chairwoman Yoon—a businesswoman. While Chairwoman Yoon appeared refreshingly straightforward, former Superintendent Cha was gentle and meticulous.
Hae Yeon walked through the garden—planted densely with trees to block outside noise—at neither a hurried nor leisurely pace. Coming to her in-laws’ house at this hour today had been the right choice, after all—she’d gotten to meet Lee Su Rin.
“Is your lack of surprise just your nature?”
Just as she stepped out the gate, a low voice came from behind. Without turning around, Hae Yeon walked out, though she knew Chairwoman Yoon and her husband were still in the garden.
“You didn’t react even when I called myself your husband’s lover—and again today, nothing, Ms. Min Hae Yeon.”
The unfiltered voice reached her ears. Earlier, the same woman had addressed her only as “daughter-in-law,” pretending not to know her name.
“What should I do? It seems I’ll be visiting Daechi-dong often from now on, me.”
At Su Rin’s words, deliberately pressed into her ears, Hae Yeon slowly turned around. Her deep brown eyes traced a beautiful arc as she observed Su Rin’s confident stance.

Su Rin frowned slightly, clearly thinking, Are you actually smiling right now?
Hae Yeon didn’t care. She could generously accept Su Rin visiting Daechi-dong frequently—whether as her in-laws’ acquaintance or as Do Ha’s childhood friend’s younger sister. It simply didn’t matter. Because—
“Go ahead, Ms. Lee Su Rin. After all, my husband doesn’t even live here.”
Hae Yeon offered an artificial, forced smile—leaving Su Rin flustered.
“Oh, now I understand clearly.”
Hae Yeon curved her eyes fully upward—just as Su Rin had done moments earlier toward Chairwoman Yoon and her husband.
“One-sided love.”
“What are you talking about…?”
“Everything you’ve been doing since middle school, Ms. Lee Su Rin—your one-sided feelings for my husband.”
Su Rin’s face twisted in shock. Leaving her dumbfounded expression behind, Hae Yeon walked toward her car.
As she drove out of Daechi-dong, Hae Yeon felt exhausted—dealing with a complicated case and now Lee Su Rin too. Even with unrequited love, Su Rin had powerful backing behind her.
It was true—seeing Chairwoman Yoon and her husband, usually so cold and distant, treat Su Rin with such warmth had left Hae Yeon feeling hollow. But as long as her husband’s heart remained faithful, she could endure.
She let Su Rin be precisely because she hadn’t done anything to disturb Do Ha. If Su Rin had revealed to him that she’d claimed to be his mistress, Do Ha would have felt deeply ashamed toward his wife. That was exactly how much Hae Yeon trusted him.
‘Why should we, as husband and wife, have to suffer like this?’
While waiting at a traffic light, Hae Yeon’s expression had already hardened with resolve.
