“Last night’s events… surely weren’t just a dream, were they?”

Adel frantically scanned the room. She had to find proof that what happened yesterday hadn’t been a dream—or, better yet, something that would definitively prove it had all been a cruel joke or a lie from the very beginning. Of course, the latter would be infinitely preferable.

Adel meticulously searched the nightstand, under the bed, and even the spot where she’d tossed her dagger last night.

If she could find even a single piece of evidence, she thought she’d be satisfied. Yet the room held no trace whatsoever—only emptiness and silence.

Not only was the dagger missing, but even the glass vial containing the green medicine Father Padre had given her was nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, the thin nightgown, which should have been slightly askew from last night’s struggles, lay perfectly as it had when first put on, and the sheets—supposedly stained with blood—were spotlessly clean.

Adel numbly lowered both hands.

“Could it really… all have been just a dream?”

She slowly retraced her memories. Valentin had confessed to being a dragon, told her about some horrifying contract, explained that the lives of the Ansgar people had been put up as collateral, and she had entered into that contract to stop it.

In the sober light of noon, it all seemed not merely absurd but utterly preposterous.

And, of course, as proof that the contract had been made…

“Yes, the proof!”

Adel hurriedly climbed out of bed and stood before the large mirror. Suddenly, she felt a strange sense of déjà vu about the mirror’s position—it definitely hadn’t been here last night…

“Never mind that.”

She cast one uneasy glance at the mirror, then pulled her nightgown down past her shoulders. As proof the contract had been sealed, Valentin had said a mark would appear somewhere on her body. If it truly existed, then last night couldn’t have been a dream.

She twisted this way and that before the mirror, searching for the mark. After spinning around several times because it was so hard to spot, she finally heard—
