“No!”

Adel clamped her hands tightly over her ears. It was a horrifying—truly horrifying—voice. The mere thought that she had entertained such an idea, even for a single moment, filled her with unbearable self-loathing.

Was this the vulgar nature Count Reichenau had repeatedly claimed resided within her?

“That’s impossible… I can’t do that.”

At that instant, a flicker of something strange passed through Valentin’s eyes—but Adel, recoiling in disgust at her own horror, missed it entirely.

“I must tell Father Padre about this at once…”

[Adelheid.]

She flinched and lifted her head. The dragon had never spoken to her directly like this before; previously, it had only conveyed memories.

Though not as overwhelming as when memories flooded in, the sensation was still dreadful—it felt as if someone had violently torn down the thick walls she’d built and stormed inside. Overwhelmed by this repulsive terror, Adel swayed unsteadily and barely managed to grip the table.

[Even after I’ve revealed everything, I still sense fear in you, Adel. That saddens me.]

“Saddens… you?”

Adel narrowed her eyes sharply despite her ragged breathing. ‘It’ genuinely seemed dejected, just as it claimed. Was even this conversation merely an imitation? Now that it had apparently fully recalled Valentin’s memories, it could pluck out useful fragments…

‘Maybe it remembered everything from the very beginning. How foolish I must have looked.’
