My Husband Fell in Love - Chapter 9
“How long are you planning to keep following me?”
Seo Ha asked while pressing the smart key she had snatched from Seung Oh. The footsteps that had been obviously trailing her since earlier got closer and stopped right behind her.
“I’m just on my way to my own car. Does Yoon Seo Ha have some kind of persecution complex? Or is it princess syndrome?”
“Get in Secretary Ryu’s car before I smash you with an axe.”
“You’ve got quite a mouth. You should’ve talked to your husband like that earlier.”
Seo Ha spun around and glared at Kyung Joon.
“Don’t you have anything better to do on a refreshing weekend? Sitting in a café eavesdropping on other people’s private lives?”
“I wasn’t eavesdropping. I was sitting there, and it just happened to reach my ears. In that quiet place, you were openly filming a drama about affairs and whatnot—how could I not hear it?”
“Your speech has been getting shorter and shorter since earlier. Did you bite your tongue while gaping at the drama?”
“Wipe your tears first before we talk. Santa Claus is probably doing a U-turn with his gifts right now.”
The handkerchief Kyung Joon tossed half-heartedly landed on top of Seo Ha’s head. Seo Ha really wanted to punch her past self for ever thanking this guy.
“I didn’t cry.”
“Is smudged mascara under the eyes the new trendy makeup these days?”
Seo Ha rubbed her face with the handkerchief that had landed on her head. Far from being wet or stained with mascara, it was perfectly clean.
“Are you messing with me right now?”
Kyung Joon caught the handkerchief she threw back in mid-air.
“You don’t even know whether you cried or not. That’s why you get played by trash like that.”
Kyung Joon waited for another sharp insult to fly his way. However, Yoon Seo Ha, who had been glaring fiercely at him, said nothing.
This isn’t it.
Yoon Seo Ha, who had turned away, opened the car door and got into the driver’s seat. For some reason, he had a feeling that letting her go like this would leave an awfully bad taste in his mouth. Kyung Joon hurriedly ran over, opened the passenger door, and hopped in.
“What do you think you’re doing? Get out right now!”
“Let’s just go together. I’ve got nothing to do on this refreshing weekend anyway.”
The guy shamelessly fastened his seatbelt already. He even adjusted the passenger seat that was set too narrowly for him to a wider position.
“Get out. Do you want me to report you?”
“If you report me and I end up in jail, who’s going to assist the president? It’ll be hard to find a secretary as good as me.”
“…….”
Seo Ha decided to end this pointless war of words. She had already spent too much energy on Lee Seung Oh and Lee Ji Soo and had no strength left to fight.
She did feel a tiny bit relieved that she wouldn’t have to be alone and pathetic. Just a little. A very, very tiny bit.
Seo Ha’s car, which Seung Oh used to ride in all the time, pulled out of the hotel parking lot. Seo Ha made a right turn and entered the eight-lane road. It wasn’t even a time when traffic should be this bad, yet the cars weren’t moving well, and there was commotion up ahead.
“What’s going on? Did an accident hap—”
Seo Ha, who had been closely examining the source of the commotion, stopped her gaze across the road.
Lee Seung Oh was leaping over the center divider and running to the opposite side.
Drivers were honking and swearing at him as he passionately hugged Lee Ji Soo with an intensity she had never seen in her life and shared a fierce kiss. It was a pathetic, shameful, infuriating, and sad sight all at once.
“Wow. What an absolute idiot.”
Kyung Joon perfectly voiced what Seo Ha wanted to say and covered her eyes with his large hand.
“Don’t look. You threw those divorce papers like a total badass. Yoon Seo Ha may be annoying and rude, but you’re way too good for an idiot like that.”
It felt bad, yet strangely comforting.
“You’re pretty annoying yourself.”
Seo Ha grabbed Kyung Joon’s hand and pushed it away. When she glanced over, Lee Seung Oh and Lee Ji Soo were still passionately entangled.
“I told you not to look.”
Kyung Joon grabbed Seo Ha’s head with both hands and turned it straight forward.
“Step on the gas. We need to move forward.”
Seo Ha did as Kyung Joon said and pressed the accelerator. The car passed the century’s couple still lost in their passionate make-out session and entered the straight lane.
“You drive well.”
Kyung Joon grinned and pressed the radio button. A song that was popular back in their vague middle school days started playing.
“Where does Secretary Ryu live?”
“Why do you ask?”
“I need to drop you off before you get out, right?”
“You’re really driving me all the way home? You’re kinder than I thought.”
“I’m tired, so just tell me quickly.”
Trending
“Eurwangni.”
“What?”
Seo Ha whipped her head to the side, wondering if he was joking. Surprisingly, Kyung Joon’s expression was serious.
“I said I live in Eurwangni. Hurry up. You said you’d drive me, didn’t you?”
“You commute from Eurwangni to Gangnam? Every day?”
“On weekdays I stay in an officetel near the company, and on weekends I’m in Eurwangni. Today’s the weekend.”
It kind of made sense. Still, Eurwangni was too far.
“It’s too far. I’ll drop you off here, so fig—”
“Let’s just go. I helped you, didn’t I?”
“How exactly did you help?”
“I watched over you. In case Yoon Seo Ha started crying again.”
“I told you not to cut me off. And who’s crying?”
“I could totally see you holding back tears. I kept watching to see if you’d cry or not.”
“Why were you staring like that? Are you a pervert? A stalker?”
“If you had cried, I was just going to drag you out of there.”
Seo Ha was momentarily speechless. Ryu Kyung Joon had actually been quite helpful. Thanks to meeting his gaze at the moment she was about to lose her reason and become pathetic, she had managed to protect her pride.
“Why?”
“I told you, didn’t I? No matter how annoying Yoon Seo Ha is, you’re too good for that idiot. Letting the president’s daughter be treated like that would be negligence of duty on my part.”
Kyung Joon, who had been looking out the window for a moment, added as if talking to himself.
“Still, you did well. That idiot—you could tell even just looking at the back of his head that he got properly smacked.”
He really was a strange man. Among everyone Seo Ha knew, he was the rudest and most ill-mannered, yet the casual things he said somehow comforted her and cleared the frustration in her chest.
Since going home alone would just leave her feeling down anyway, driving to Eurwangni as a little road trip didn’t seem like a bad idea.
It took a full three hours to get through the congested roads to Eurwangni. During that time, Kyung Joon reclined his seat all the way back, slept very comfortably, and opened his eyes.
“Ugh, I slept well.”
Seo Ha stared in disbelief at Kyung Joon stretching lazily.
“How can you just fall asleep so openly like that?”
“I sleep when I’m sleepy. Doesn’t Yoon Seo Ha sleep when she’s tired?”
Seo Ha almost flicked his forehead—his skin now looking much brighter after a good nap and that infuriating grin on his face—but held back.
“Where’s your house?”
“Straight ahead, then right turn. Yeah. Keep going… Yes. Now left turn here. Go in here and straight again.”
Kyung Joon pointed with his finger and gave directions like a navigation system. Following his instructions led them to a seaside clam grill restaurant.
“Over there. Pull into the parking lot.”
“Does Secretary Ryu run a clam grill place?”
“Just park first. The car behind us is honking.”
Pushed by Kyung Joon and the car behind them, Seo Ha reluctantly parked in the clam restaurant’s lot. The moment the car stopped, Kyung Joon slipped out, came around to the driver’s side, and flung the door open.
“Get out.”
“Why?”
“You came all the way to Eurwangni and were planning to leave without eating grilled clams?”
The fragrant smell of butter-grilled scallops wafted into the wide-open car.
Smells delicious.
Come to think of it, she hadn’t eaten properly in days. The moment she realized that, her stomach started growling loudly.
“Good grief. Why are you spacing out like that?”
Kyung Joon suddenly leaned in and fumbled with Seo Ha’s seatbelt. A refreshing scent came from his suddenly close neck. It smelled like grass after rain, or maybe the sea that suddenly appears in early winter.
“Secretary Ryu.”
Kyung Joon, who had been looking for the seatbelt button, turned to look at her.
“What perfume do you use?”
The eyes that always looked down coldly at Seo Ha from above blinked slowly a couple of times.
“…Soap.”
“What?”
“I use soap.”

Click—the seatbelt finally came undone. A refreshing soap scent lingered where Kyung Joon had stood up without regret.
“Oh. Soap.”
Seo Ha got out of the car and slammed the door shut. Kyung Joon was already ahead, entering the clam restaurant’s entrance.
“What are you doing? Hurry up! Ah, table for two. Window seat, please.”
Chased by his urging, Seo Ha ran up and sat at a window table on the second floor. Through the large window, the unobstructed sea filled her eyes completely.
“Wow. The ocean!”
She had been too busy to even think about seeing the sea, but now that she saw it, it was wonderful. Leaning her hands on the window and letting out a gasp of admiration, a bright smile spread across Seo Ha’s lips.
Kyung Joon leaned back in his chair and watched her.
It was the first time he had seen her smile in a non-business way. A woman who was already quite pretty looked truly beautiful when she smiled brightly. Subjectively she was an annoying woman, but objectively he had to admit at least that much.
Much better than crying.
Although it was because of “business,” sitting in that hotel café suddenly felt like a pretty good coincidence. Going home without a car was a bit daunting.
Well, he could think about that after finishing the clams.
“Food’s here.”
Charcoal fire and various neatly prepared clams appeared on the table. The butter-grilled scallops that had tempted Seo Ha earlier were there too.
“…….”
“…….”
The two sat blankly staring at each other across the food, then spoke at the same time.
“Aren’t you going to grill?”
“Aren’t you going to grill them?”
“…….”
“…….”
After one second of silence, their voices overlapped again.
“I can’t grill these things.”
“I can’t grill these things.”
What kind of person is this?
Seo Ha repeated the exact same thought she had when she first met him.
“You’re the one who said to come here, Secretary Ryu. Grill them quickly.”
“I’m paying, so Yoon Seo Ha, you grill.”
“Do I look like someone who’d pay with my body because I can’t afford clams? Who drove all the way here?”
“Fair point.”
The grilling tongs eventually ended up in Kyung Joon’s hands. Since he had them anyway, he did his best to grill and flip the clams. Although the rising smoke soon brought a staff member running over, the clams still turned out deliciously cooked.
“Do you drink?”
Kyung Joon asked while shaking the freshly opened soju bottle.
“Will you pay for a designated driver?”
“No problem.”
“Deal.”
Seo Ha waved at a passing staff member.
“Excuse me. One bottle of beer and two beer glasses, please!”
Kyung Joon’s hand, which had been opening the soju bottle, paused.
“…Somaek?”
“Somaek.”
“You know your stuff more than you look.”
“I studied abroad, you know.”
Seo Ha poured half a glass of beer into each of the two glasses, dropped in a full shot of soju, covered the top with a napkin, and pushed one toward him.
“Bottoms up. To the idiot.”
It was absurd. On the very day her husband of a lifetime cheated and she threw divorce papers at him, here she was in Eurwangni grilling clams and drinking somaek with a guy she hated.
“Why toast to the idiot? It’ll only upset your stomach.”
Kyung Joon took the glass Seo Ha offered, clinked it hard to make a whirlpool.
“Bottoms up. To the idiot’s ex-wife, Yoon Seo Ha.”
