The young head of House Clovis, and master of this estate, was utterly absorbed in reading a letter delivered to him since early morning.

Sealed with black wax and bearing no sender’s name, the letter contained only a brief message confirming that his plan had succeeded.

‘Walter Ertman is dead.’

Although the letter stated that Cedric was preventing this news from spreading, death could not be undone—there would inevitably be limits to how long it could be concealed.

More importantly, Blake and Catarina had no intention of letting Cedric hide Walter’s death. As soon as the sun rose fully, Cedric would have to work hard to keep Catarina from demanding answers about Walter’s whereabouts.

‘And then I, too, can finally conclude my deal.’

Louis closed his eyes wearily, recalling recent events.

Ever since regaining all his memories, Louis had only one goal: to separate Odette from Walter. If Walter had no memory of the past, Louis might have excused it—but knowing everything yet still choosing to marry Odette was, at best, blinding her to satisfy his own selfish desires.

‘Selfish desire… I’m no different.’

Even if it was for Odette’s sake, Louis couldn’t deny his own longing to undo past mistakes. Walter’s hidden secret had merely served as the first justification for his own selfish yearning.

Louis knew this all too well, yet this life—carrying the weight of past memories alone—felt unbearably lonely. Even aware that everything he thought he held securely might soon be swept away, he found himself unable to truly take root in this weary existence.

For someone who had lost everything, a new opportunity might seem like a blessing—but for one who had ruined everything, another chance was nothing but an extension of suffering.

Odette died, and Louis finally admitted that he had ruined everything.

The people he had once called friends abandoned him the moment he stopped opening his purse, leaving with scornful spittle. His investments—undertaken even at the cost of souring Odette’s relationship with Dowager Countess Clovis—had long since failed utterly.
