Before Elodie died, the relationship between Duke Lysianthus and the two young counts was not bad at all.

It was rather puzzling, considering how furiously her two older brothers had raged upon hearing news of Elodie’s engagement, but anyone who knew how Luke treated Elodie would find it perfectly understandable.

Dylan and Renan knew it well too—that Elodie was someone who would be loved wherever she went, yet no man could possibly love her more than Luke did.

Elodie loved Luke in return, so as brothers who wished for her happiness, they ultimately had no choice but to bless the marriage.

Luke, too, always felt deeply grateful toward Elodie’s birth family.

After all, wasn’t it the very place where his utterly beloved wife had been born and raised?

The three men who adored Elodie to an extreme degree surprisingly got along quite well. Usually, Dylan or Renan would prepare something utterly absurd, and Luke would top it off with something even more extravagant.

But that was all back when Elodie was still alive.

Elodie had always been frail.

It was commonplace for her to nearly suffocate from running just a little, due to her asthma, and every seasonal change brought relentless colds accompanied by high fevers. Naturally, they could only fret endlessly over her, afraid she might vanish like smoke if held too tightly or blow away if left unattended.

Yet her health hadn’t been so poor as to suggest she’d die so young.

The decisive cause of Elodie’s death was her weakened body’s inability to withstand the strain of a difficult pregnancy and childbirth, followed by the stress of a stillbirth. Had she never conceived, she would surely still be alive.

That drove Dylan mad.

He knew—Duke Lysianthus bore no blame for her death.

From the very beginning, Luke had worried about Elodie’s fragile condition and discouraged her from getting pregnant, even going so far as to suggest adopting his younger brother’s son as heir.
