The Lexion knight bowed deeply. Even the servants, who had been purely businesslike when the guests first arrived at the ducal mansion, had become exceedingly courteous at the duke’s single command to observe proper etiquette.

Edith could guess the reason for this sudden change.

‘I don’t know what magic is on Madam Leah’s necklace… but they must have recognized who Walter really is.’

It was clear that the secret of Walter’s birth would soon be revealed.

Edith wished that, rather than Walter discovering his bloodline himself, House Lexion would acknowledge him as someone they needed and reveal the truth themselves.

She wanted Walter to witness, even for the briefest moment, the Duke of Lexion fretting over how to identify and win over his own grandson.

‘After all, Walter has always been the one wondering who his family is and to which house he truly belongs.’

Edith intertwined her fingers with his, seated beside her. It was that very hand which had decisively struck down the duke’s outstretched arm without the slightest hesitation.

Since Walter still didn’t know the duke was his maternal grandfather, to him, the duke was merely a man who might one day become emperor.

And yet, Walter had boldly laid hands on such a man—without fear—to protect her.

“Walter, you really are… like a wild stallion. If it were me, I’d be too frightened to move.”

She had clearly meant it as a comment on his unpredictable nature, yet Walter responded with a meaningful smile.

“Of all the countless animals in the world, there must be a reason you chose a horse.”
