“Please remove your hand.”

Walter, unable to bear the Duke’s threat any longer, pressed down firmly on Duke Lexion’s hand.

The hall fell into stunned silence at the audacity of a mere bodyguard obstructing the second in line to the imperial throne, Duke Lexion himself.

“Walter.”

Edith urgently called out to Walter, yet he refused to back down, his eyes blazing with resolve.

Surprisingly, it was Franz Lexion who first withdrew his hostility.

‘What on earth…?’

Leah’s voice, infused with magic into the necklace, reached only Duke Lexion’s ears.

When he halted abruptly without rebuking the guard who had laid hands on him, everyone naturally grew perplexed.

Yet Franz had no time to care about others’ reactions.

“Well, truthfully, I’m not sure if Edith will ever get the chance to meet Father. But if she does, I hope it’s for a good reason—like if Edith becomes top of the academy and receives a Lexion scholarship.”

Leah’s cheerful voice, casually recounting small matters, was as refreshingly familiar as Franz remembered.

It was indeed his daughter. That irrepressibly bright, playful tone and gentle voice—impossible to fabricate.

The Duke slowly withdrew the hand he had used to pressure Edith. He loathed himself for having crushed his daughter’s very first wish so cruelly.

“Oh, Edith here is the girl I met in Viscount Portrion’s domain. I stayed at her home for a short while. Though Lady Lowell’s family has fallen so low as to be nearly commoners, their kindness and warmth always put me at ease.”
