“There was nothing special about it. Everyone knows that Sophia and Whitman secretly indulged in luxuries using the money meant for repairing the lower riverbank, and it’s also widely known that heavy rains are predicted for next year, isn’t it?”

Helen replied to her statement. After all, even past Viscounts Portrion had planned to save up for several years just to afford the embankment repairs.

Edith, clearly aware of this fact, gave a light nod.

“You’re right. Since Isabel knew I would renounce my inheritance, she’s likely to cover part of it with that money—but even then, a significant amount will still be needed. Relying solely on donations won’t be nearly enough.”

“But Lady Isabel said she’d cover part of the embankment repair costs with her own inherited wealth and raise the rest through donations, didn’t she?”

“That’s not just ordinary donations. The merchants who donate will be buying honor—and at the same time, making a sound investment.”

Helen paused to consider this, then asked again.

“An investment as well as a donation?”

“Yes. Isabel will probably erect a small memorial of some sort and engrave the names of those who contributed to the embankment fund.”
