“Why are you like this? Are you okay?”

The moment she frowned, Walter reflexively asked. Before he could even think, his body had already moved from the chair opposite hers to the one beside her.

“No, it’s nothing. I just feel a bit queasy.”

Edith gave a vague, half-hearted reply.

Walter quietly pushed aside the food she hadn’t even touched, then slightly opened the window to let in fresh air.

Edith felt guilty—not only had she failed to express gratitude for the meal he’d gone to such trouble to prepare, but she also felt as though she’d done something terrible.

This reunion was far from what she’d vaguely imagined. Since she’d essentially driven him away unilaterally, she hadn’t expected to restore their former closeness—but she’d at least hoped not to burden him.

Just as she sat silently, only her eyes moving, Walter spoke first.

“I’ve arranged a place for you to stay in the building the volunteer corps uses for administrative purposes. We’re heading there now.”

Edith had just escaped the mansion and was already overwhelmed with thoughts about where to go next. Hearing that Walter had secured a place for her to sleep tonight filled her with gratitude, even as it made her feel shamefully indebted.

She’d only managed to sneak out with a few pieces of jewelry and hadn’t even arranged safe passage for him to the volunteer corps—yet here he was, considerate toward her despite how cruelly she’d treated him. It almost made her fear she might start believing things that weren’t true.

“Thank you. I’ll find my own place to stay as quickly as possible, so I won’t impose on you for long.”

“……”

Walter gave no reaction to her eagerness to leave soon.

Soon, the carriage stopped in front of the volunteer corps’ building, nestled among dense conifers.
