She recalled the blueprint of the mansion’s secret passage, which she had found in the sketchbook when searching for Walter’s binding magic release incantation scroll.

The mansion was vast, so she couldn’t remember every minute detail, but she was certain there was an entrance to a secret passage in Sophia’s study. If she went there, she could hide briefly until they turned their attention away.

‘When I saw the blueprint, I assumed Sophia’s room must have originally been intended for the highest-ranking lady of the house.’

Edith headed toward Sophia’s study—a space adjoining the bedroom that effectively served as an office.

Just as she had during her initial search for the secret passage entrance, she ran her fingers along the old bookshelf until a specific spot caught her fingertips.

Pushing that spot while sliding the bookshelf sideways, the heavy case moved effortlessly, revealing the mansion’s hidden passage.

Her face twisted at the damp, cold air, but now was no time to be picky.

Edith gathered a lamp and a matchbox from Sophia’s bookshelf, along with a thick cloak from her wardrobe, then glanced at the jewelry chest.

‘This is compensation for the harm I’ve suffered.’

Without hesitation, she took necklaces and earrings long discarded in the chest’s corner, deemed unfashionable and forgotten. Though she had refused to claim any inheritance—unwilling to become Viscountess Portrion—this was strictly compensation for damages owed by Sophia.

After securing emergency funds for any unforeseen circumstances, she stepped into the secret passage.

Fortunately, the mechanism allowed her to open the bookshelf from inside as well, and once she slid it back into place, the entrance vanished seamlessly.

‘If I’d known this would happen, I should’ve memorized the blueprint more thoroughly.’

After glimpsing the secret passage blueprint in the sketchbook a few times, she’d tucked it along with Walter’s binding magic release incantation scroll into an old cloak and sewn it shut.
