“Kill Walter?”

Edith stopped walking and froze on the spot.

If only she had entered the secret passage a little earlier and overheard Elizabeth and Eisen’s conversation, she might have grasped the context.

But having heard only the latter part, she couldn’t even begin to guess why they intended to kill Walter.

Unaware that Edith was listening on the other side of the wall, Eisen continued speaking.

“The Viscount placed a binding spell on that man, preventing him from leaving the mansion.”

“Yeah. I’ve searched the Viscount’s study several times but couldn’t find the spell’s counter-charm scroll.”

Elizabeth, too, confessed her actions without the slightest hesitation.

To Edith, already shaken by their talk of killing Walter, Elizabeth’s casual demeanor delivered yet another blow.

“It’s a shame, but we have no choice. If we’d identified his bloodline and sold him off, it would’ve been quite profitable.”

“That’s true, but… there’s nothing we can do right now. Had we found the counter-charm scroll for the Viscount’s binding spell, we could’ve kidnapped him alive.”

“Now that the Viscount is dead, we’ll deal with Walter as soon as the funeral ends and everyone leaves. Have you secured the assassins to bring in?”

Edith clamped a hand over her mouth, afraid even her breathing might give her away, as she listened to Eisen and Elizabeth’s conversation.

The more she listened, the clearer the picture became. Learning that Eisen was actually captain of House Gerturk’s secret assassination unit—based in the capital—filled her with dread.

But what terrified her even more was realizing the two were making thorough preparations to ensure Walter’s death.
