Jeffrey had been the youngest son of an unremarkable trading house, overshadowed by his older brothers and left with nothing to inherit.

But he knew exactly where to apply his strengths—his quick hands, sharp eyes, and the fact that he could down an entire oak barrel of liquor without getting drunk.

‘Gambling is my path.’

He’d get people thoroughly drunk, then pretend to be drunk himself while deftly sweeping up their money.

It was only natural that a viscount, who had been losing constantly since entering the gambling scene, approached Jeffrey, a known expert.

One day, as Jeffrey deliberately let the viscount win occasionally just enough to keep him in good spirits—even in games he could easily win—the viscount spoke up.

“Hey, Jeffrey… the thing is, I’ve run out of money.”

The viscount continued in a lower, more careful tone. The others who’d been playing cards with them were already sprawled on the carpet, drooling from drink, leaving only the viscount and Jeffrey at the table.

“Say… would it be acceptable to wager something other than money? Like… a scrap of paper?”

Jeffrey nearly severed the viscount’s hand right then for making nonsense bets at a sacred gambling table—but he noticed the man’s eyes held an unusual gleam.

It was as if he’d been waiting precisely for this moment alone with him.

Sensing hidden intentions, Jeffrey decided to hear him out first.

“Well… if that scrap of paper holds any value, I suppose anything would do.”

Pleased by this sufficiently merchant-like answer, the viscount burst into hearty laughter and ordered his attendant to fetch something. Then, taking a sip of wine, he began a long tale.
